The Most Reverend Dr. James Murphy (born in 1744 in Drumshevra near Scotstown, Co. Monaghan) was a priest in the Diocese of Clogher ordained in 1768. He was appointed the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Clogher in Ireland in May 1798. He became bishop of the diocese on 3 November, 1801, following the death of his predecessor, Dr. Hugh O’Reilly.[1] He died in office in on 19 November, 1824 having served as bishop of his diocese for almost twenty-three years. Dr. Murphy was succeeded by Bishop Edward Kernan, who had was appointed his Coadjutor Bishop on 18 August, 1816.
