Bishop Hoban High School

Bishop Hoban High School is a Roman Catholic high school of the Diocese of Scranton, located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The school was founded in 1971, and the current building opened in 1972. The school is named after Most Rev. Michael J. Hoban, second Bishop of Scranton (1899-1926).
The largest high school of the Diocese of Scranton, Bishop Hoban has an annual enrollment of around 650 (grades 9 through 12) with nearly 60 faculty and administrators. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The curriculum requires four years of English and theology, one year of Western Civilization, two years of American history, three years of natural science, three years of mathematics, two years of a modern or classical language, and a physical education course each year. Many electives are also offered, such as art and music (several), Journalism, QBASIC, C++ Programming, Law Education, Accounting, Survey of Dramatic Literature, Environmental Science, and Statistics. Many AP courses are offered, in subjects such as English Literature, American History, American Government, Chemistry, JAVA Programming, Psychology, and Studio Art. Bishop Hoban maintains a cooperative agreement with Wilkes University to allow interested, qualified students to pursue college-level Calculus courses there during their senior year.
A large portion of the faculty hold masters degrees in their fields; one faculty member currently holds a doctorate. Over 75% have 20 or more years of experience teaching.

Bishop Hoban offers many athletic programs for its students. In the fall, sports include JV/Varsity Football, Cross Country, Golf, JV/Varsity Soccer, Girls' Volleyball, and JV/Varsity Field Hockey; in the winter, JV/Varisty Boys' Basketball, JV/Varsity Girls' Basketball, Varsity Boys' Swimming, Varsity Girls' Swimming, and Boys'/Girls' Diving; in the spring, Varsity Track and Field, JV/Varsity Softball, JV/Varsity Girls' Soccer, JV/Varsity Boys' Volleyball, and JV/Varsity Baseball. There are also various Jr. High athletic programs offered through the school for students not yet attending the high school but do attend one of Bishop Hoban's feeder schools.

The school also offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Marching/Concert Band, Chorus/Seasonal Singers, Chess Club, School Musical and Stage Crew, TV Club (televised morning announcements), French Club, Spanish Club, The ARC (the annual yearbook), SADD, Rotary Interact, and The Quill (literary magazine). The student body is represented by the Student Council, with members from each class, as well as the entire student body, elected each year. The National Honor Society's Mother Elizabeth Seton Chapter at Hoban annually inducts juniors and seniors who have met its criteria for membership.
[edit] Future Changes
The Diocese of Scranton officially announced on January 17 that Bishop Hoban will be consolidated with the three other Catholic high schools in Luzerne County (Bishop Hafey, Bishop O'Reilly, and Seton Catholic) effective as early as July 1, 2007 [1]. The Bishop Hoban building will be used to house this new school, which will be known as Holy Redeemer High School (announced by the Diocese January 30, 2007) [2]. Details as to the new school's administration, faculty, and colors will be announced in the future. This plan was originally proposed by Meitler Consultants, Inc, of Wisconsin in late 2006.
The Diocese announced on February 27, 2007 that Holy Redeemer will be led by Mr. James J. Redington, Principal, and Miss Susan W. Dennen, Associate Principal [3]. Mr. Redington is currently principal at Seton Catholic, while Miss Dennen serves in that role at Bishop O'Reilly.
