Birnagar is a city and a municipality in Nadia district in the state of West Bengal, India.
Gamchha a replacement of towel for poor peoples (basically for bengalis), invented in palitpara, birnagar.
Previously it was an iseland of river ganges. There were 9 iselands, all of them was called Nabadweep (9 iseland). Birnagar was one of them.
Birnagar Municipality is the one of the old municipality of India (more than 200 years old).
First chairman of the Birnagar Municipality was Kabi Nabinchandra Sen.
Before british came, Birnagar was named as ULA. You can get the name from short story Post Master (R.N Tagore) and novel Aporajito (Bivutivusan).
It was the only town, that had two Jamindar at british age and before that. One part of Birnagar was of Mukherjee one part was of Mustafi.
Two high schools are there in Birnagar, one is Birnagar high School (boys), another one is Shivakali Girls High School.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Birnagar had a population of 26,596. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Birnagar has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 76% and female literacy of 65%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
