[edit] Boundaries

The existing seat is formed from the electoral wards of Selly Oak, Bournville and Kings Norton. It houses many students and staff from the nearby Birmingham University

[edit] Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Birmingham and the West Midlands, the Boundary Commission for England has created a modified Selly Oak constituency, which is made from the following electoral wards:

  • Billesley, Bournville, Brandwood and Selly Oak.

[edit] History

Since its creation in 1955 the seat has switched hands three times between Labour and the Conservatives. The seat has progressively swung towards Labour from being a safe Conservative seat when it was created in 1974, this was due to housing redevelopments that took place in the sixties and seventies. More recently it has acquired a reputation for electing outspoken MPs, first with the victory of Conservative Anthony Beaumont-Dark in 1979 and then with his defeat by Labour's Lynne Jones in 1992. With the announcement that Lynne Jones will retire at the next General Election, it is likely that Steve McCabe (politician) currently MP for Birmingham Hall Green will be the Labour candidate.
