Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, (Hindi: बिरला प्रौद्योगिकी सनसथान मेसरा ) (commonly known as BIT Mesra or BIT Ranchi) is a premier autonomous engineering institute located at Ranchi in India. It is a deemed university under Sec. 3 of the UGC act 1986. It was declared as one of the top 10 engineering institutes in the country in India Today-AC NIELSEN-ORG-MARG June 2005. BIT is not to be confused with BITS (Birla Institute of Technology and Science), another engineering institution located in Pilani.

BIT Mesra functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a high powered Board of Governors, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the A.I.C.T.E., The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri G.P. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the Chancellor of the Institute. The Technical Council decides the academic policy of the Institute.

Under Graduate Admission is made through merit at All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by C.B.S.E., New Delhi. The candidates with top ranks in AIEEE usually opt for this college.

The Birla Institute of Technology was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, by the Philanthropist- Industrialist Mr. B M Birla with a vision to be recognized as a world-class learning institution for engineering and technology by providing the highest-quality academic programmes that foster student development and connect knowledge, practice, and outstanding scholarly research.
Over the last fifty years, the Institute has not just kept pace with the times; it has often taken a lead in introduction of programs in emerging The Institute has also been active in initiating as well as becoming a part of International ventures and tie-ups. It has collaborative arrangements with Universities in the USA, UK & Canada. It is an active member of the EAGER NETWIC Project of ASIA LINK programme of European Commission for establishing a world class academic network of Higher education in the rapidly growing field of Wireless and Mobile Communication between the five partner Universities. BIT has been catering to the manpower needs of almost all the major sectors of the economy since the last five decades. BIT alumni have made the Institute proud of their achievements, many of whom are amongst the leaders of the Industry, both in India and abroad. The Institute along with its extension centres at present has more than 7500 students enrolled for different Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. It also has more than 150 registered students for the Ph.D. Programmes.

There are 13 student hostels (dormitories) in BIT. Nine hostels for boys and Four separate hostels for girls. Students initially share rooms but get individual rooms later on.
Two more Hostels for Boys are under construction and are expected to be completed in a years time

The Institute has a rich tradition of sporting activities. The Institute has hosted several All India as well as Zonal Level tournaments. Adequate facilities are provided for various sports. They are:

The BIT extension centres , spread across several major cities within the country as well as overseas, function under the complete academic as well as administrative control of the parent University i.e. BIT, Mesra. Intake process for the extension centres is as stringent as that of the main campus and only the top rankers find admission. The Centres offer a wide range of programmes ranging from undergraduate level to programmes in Computer Applications and Business Management. The students from these centres are placed in visiting organizations through the centralized campus recruitment programme at BIT Mesra as well as at the respective extension centres. Students from the extension centres have proved themselves to be very competitive and with the right set of competencies for campus selection.

A four day Spring Fest is organized every year in February. Various teams from BIT as well as other colleges participate to win grand prizes during the event. The main attractions are Band-Nite, Dance-Nite, Music-Nite and Core-Nite which fill the evenings with a lot of fun.

It is a biennial international level technical Festival organized by the BIT chapter of IEEE. Various teams from BIT as well as other colleges from India and abroad participate. Intra BIT technical fest organised by IEE chapter of BIT mesra. NOW into its 4th year,it is a one of a kind event where students compete among each other as Teams rather than as individuals. First technIEEk was organised in October 2004.
