Birkenhead Town railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Birkenhead Town railway station was a railway station based near the current entrance to the Queensway Tunnel on Grange Road. The station was opened in 1889 to accommodate the commercial centre of Birkenhead however once the road tunnel (which had been opened opposite the entrance to the station) was opened in June 1934 it found itself cut off from reasonable access to the town's market area and nearby residential district by Birkenhead Priory.
The line which travelled through Birkenhead Town station was the branch which bore trains from Birkenhead Woodside to London Paddington meaning that not all trains stopped at Birkenhead Town. The tunnel (now partially infilled) to Birkenhead Woodside lay to the north of the platform ends of the station. To the immediate right of this tunnel entrance was a tunnel leading to the second Birkenhead rail terminus, Birkenhead Monks Ferry. The original Birkenhead terminus was Grange Road which lay to the west of Birkenhead Town.
Birkenhead Town closed in 1945, although the line continued in use until 1967 when Birkenhead Woodside station closed. The tunnels and site of the station still exist (as of 2007), although they are now enclosed between the approach roads to the Queensway road tunnel entrance.
