Birkby, West Yorkshire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Birkby is a large multi-cultural suburb close to the town centre in Huddersfield, in the Kirklees borough of West Yorkshire, England. It has a semi-rural atmosphere. The area is home to a large white and Asian population and there are four mosques in the area. Elsewhere, the suburb contains two Church of England chapels and a Baptist church, as well as meetinghouse for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A very affluent suburb during Victorian times, Birkby was a hot-spot for immigrants due to its cheap housing and proximity to local industry.
The suburb sits in the idyllic Grimescar Valley, a greenbelt area of Huddersfield.
Birkby was home to Hopkinson Ltd, the world famous valve manufacturer. The site is currently (2007) being re-developed. 278 new homes are to be built.
