[edit] Spoiler Policy
All right, I'm sick of seeing the Legends #5 spoilers keep disappearing and reappearing from the page. Please discuss whether or not we should post the spoilers yet, instead of just editing the page over and over. But also keep in mind two things:
- If you delete spoilers, keep the cast list up; we had that list months in advance (and please don't specify who the Chronicles villains and the "favorite old hero" are).
- Eventually - say, by the end of the month - enough time will have passed and the spoilers will go up anyway.
On a related note, how long should we usually try to wait before we start spoiling new books? Remember that books usually begin to be relased up to a month before the official date, and don't become available everywhere at once. BZPower's policy is "two weeks after official date", though I think that something like "two to three weeks after first confirmed sightings" is more appropriate. But I want to hear what you guys think. Drakhan 22:30, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Two weeks - three weeks is fine because that is what the author, Greg Farshtey, wants. -ET
- Actually, I've been thinking about this some more and I sort of changed my mind; I don't think anyone at Wikipedia should be enforcing a spoiler policy. People could choose to not post spoilers for whatever reason, but Wikipedia can't and probably shouldn't force anyone to wait. Any thoughts? Drakhan 20:45, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Also, the books are not sold in many countries. It is not fair to keep those who have no other accses to the books waiting.- Bionic-Sun, British fan
Quite frankly, I don't care that Wikipedia doesn't have a spoiler policy. The author does not want the information revealed, and I think his wishes should be respected, even on a site like this. ElectricTurahk 23:26, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with you about respecting Greg's wishes, and I usually don't post spoilers the first few weeks after getting a new book. The main problem is that there are people who either doesn't know or doesn't care about author's requests, and I don't think we'd be able force them to abide by a spoiler policy. If they add spoilers, all we can do is delete them; to which they'll just add them again, and we'll just delete them again, and all this cycle will accomplish is that it will get everybody frustrated. Oniichan tried posting "Greg doesn't want spoilers posted" requests, but they were pretty much ignored - just look at the article's history page between November 6th and when the article was locked on the 9th.
- Could we get the admins on our side to enforce a policy? Possibly, but... I doubt it. Their jobs involve dealing with vandalism, bad spelling and grammar... as long as information is accurate and provable, I don't think it's within their authority to stop anyone from posting it. An admin did step in and lock the article, but that was just to stop the add/delete cycle. I honestly think the best we can do is request people wait, but if they post spoilers earlier than hoped then we deal with it and make sure the information at least includes a spoiler tag. Is there any possibility for a large Notice to be place in the section? It works on BS01 Wiki, but I have not sure about here. Bioran23 - To the impossible
- I just checked Wikipedia's existing spoiler policies (here), and they don't have large notices but they do have the small warnings that are commonly used. It also says that "Deleting relevant, neutral and verifiable information about a narrative work from Wikipedia 'because it's a spoiler' instead of properly applying spoiler templates" is considered "unacceptable". In light of both this and the fact that a few weeks have passed since Legends #5 came out, I'm going to request that the article be unlocked so that spoilers can be added. Can we add in what held Matoro's hand in the tunnel in Dark Destiny? it should of been revealed in Inferno, so why hasn't anyone put it down? I want to know what it is.
