Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation

Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation (BiFC) is a means of observing protein-protein interactions. Two proteins of interest are tagged with one half of a fluorescent protein. If the two proteins come together and the tags unite then the full fluorescent protein can form. However, this process can take 60 seconds, a limiting factor for applications of this approach.
BiFC can be used as an alternative to FRET, or it can complement it.
