Bim Bom

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bim Bom was a Moscow Circus clown known for making jokes about prominent figures of the new Communist government in Russia. In 1918, the Cheka under Felix Dzerzhinsky attempted to arrest Bim Bom during a performance. The audience at first thought this to be part of his act, but Bim Bom was shot in the back as he ran off-stage. Orlando Figes uses the incident to illustrate that, in the early days of the October Revolution, widespread public fear of the Russian secret police had not yet settled in. Hundreds attended his funeral.
