William "Bill" Mulder (1936-1995) is a fictional character on the 1993-2002 television series The X-Files.

He was thought to be Fox Mulder's father until the series finale, where the Cigarette Smoking Man is reported to be Fox's biological father. William Mulder was played by Peter Donat (as an older man) and Dean Aylesworth (as a younger man).

Born in 1936 (retconned; shown in other episodes to be at least in his 20's around 1952) in California ("Paper Clip"), Bill Mulder worked for the US State Department, while also an important member of the Syndicate. As a young man, he was friends with Well-Manicured Man, Cigarette Smoking Man, and Alvin Kurtzweil. He was the first member of the Syndicate to become disillusioned and stand up against their growing selfish goals and violent ways. In November 1973, he allowed Fox's sister, Samantha, to be abducted by the alien Colonists to ensure an alliance between the Syndicate and them, though he hesitated. His hope for his son Fox was that one day Fox would uncover the conspiracy. Soon after the incident, Bill Mulder was divorced from his wife, Teena, and he moved from their Chilmark house about 5 miles northeast to West Tisbury. It was about this time that Bill left the Syndicate. In the season 2 finale, ""Anasazi", he was killed by Alex Krycek (possibly) in his Martha's Vineyard home, at the behest of the Cigarette Smoking Man, during a visit by Fox. Bill intended during Fox's visit to reveal his involvement in the conspiracy, but could only manage after being shot to whisper his last words to Fox, "forgive me." He appeared several times afterward via flashback and as a ghost.
