Bile Salt Stimulated Lipase

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bile Salt Stimulated Lipase (or BSSL) is an enzymatic component of human milk which aids breakdown of fat. Newborn children have inadequate lipase (namely pancreatic lipase) in their gastro intestinal tract and thus nursing mothers must synthensize BSSL in milk to ensure infants metabolize and absorb essential fatty acids.
