About Big News

Deftly written, precisely performed, BIG NEWS is an ensemble of both writers and actors who undertake the near-impossible on a weekly basis - a completely different sketch comedy show every Thursday at 8pm based entirely upon a week’s worth of news; or as The Los Angeles Times has said, “A marathon of mockery that shows no sign of slowing down.” Too vague? Imagine if both The Daily Show and The Onion did sketch comedy. That’s BIG NEWS!

Since December of 2002, BIG NEWS - its staff of writers and its ensemble of actors - has succeeded in delighting hundreds of audiences with its unique ability to take news makers and up-to-the-minute news events and distill them both into bite size satirical sketches as well as news parody fodder. On another occasion, The Los Angeles Times said of BIG NEWS, “… the comic strength of the show lies in the writers’ ability to juxtapose the news of the day with the popular cultural landscape.”

Extremely fast-faced, BIG NEWS employs a variety of modern video textures and attitudes in an effort to produce not just a weekly, news-driven stage review, but a cultural event, the antidote for an era distracted by too many sequels, remakes, greatest hits albums, and live concert recordings! BIG NEWS has never repeated a single show; the week begins Friday morning and ends the following Thursday night and when it’s over, it’s over. There’s no going back.

On any given Thursday night you’ll want to arrive to BIG NEWS early (no later than 7:30pm), at The Improv Olympic West 6366 Hollywood Boulevard, between the cross streets of Cahuenga and Ivar, nestled between the Walk Of Fame stars of Paul Henreid, Chris Farley and Andy Devine. You’ll want to arrive early to BIG NEWS for two reasons: 1) Parking can be a problem (the best bet is to valet); and 2) BIG NEWS tends to sell out. It is recommended that you call and make reservations at (323) 962-7560.

The Improv Olympic West itself boasts one of the nicest, most comfortable comedy/improv theaters in all of Los Angeles, with a full-service bar and cabaret style seating, with no one under 21 admitted.

When the lights go down, and the BIG NEWS cast begins its tour de force through recent events, pausing only briefly at those landmarks that jut out from the topography of that week’s news, here’s what you’ll see: a fast-paced show performed by the best sketch ensemble currently working in Los Angeles, employing the use of monologues, sketches, and songs along with state-of-the-art video and Power Point on a gigantic screen above the stage that will make you want to come back again and again, partially out of curiosity, but also because its such a good time. Again, that’s BIG NEWS!
