Big Brother US
Series 3 (2002)

In the third season of Big Brother, the American reality TV show, which aired thirty-two episodes during the summer of 2002 from July 10 to September 25, a new twist was added to the game, in that the houseguests could compete for a Power of Veto. At a weekly meeting, the winner could decide to veto a houseguest that the Head of Household had placed on the nomination block. In this season, it was not possible for a nominee to use the veto on themselves.

Along with Big Brother 4, it has been released on DVD. However, Big Brother 3 is the only one to be released as a complete season set.

[edit] Amy Crews

Amy Crews is a 23-year-old real estate appraiser from Memphis, Tennessee who believes that she acts like a five-year-old and says that her dog, Buckie, means more to her than anything. Amy holds the record of most times being up for eviction, in her case, six times. She is the first person in US Big Brother history to re-enter the Big Brother house after her eviction. Once she re-entered the house, she was never able to vote, the first time because she was Head of Household and the other times because she was nominated. Amy Crews is one of the few American players to be shown completely nude on the show's webcast on CBS.com. Amy considered being on Big Brother 7: All Stars, but declined the offer and is now a panelist on CBS' "Revenge of the Houseguests" discussion board.

[edit] Chiara Berti

Chiara is a 25-year-old marketing representative from New York City. She claims that she is competitive, yet mysterious. Chiara was HoH during week five, and thus was the key factor for fellow housemate Josh's eviction. She also won the Power of Veto during week four. She was evicted on Day 48 from the House.

[edit] Danielle Reyes

Danielle (born January 22, 1972) is a married media buyer from Fairfield, California. She has two children, having her first at the age of 16. She says that she is a natural leader and is always thinking ahead. Danielle became known for her Diary Room visits, where she counted down the houseguests after their evictions. She was the runner-up of the season and won $50,000, losing to Lisa Donahue. Danielle impersonated famous icons, such as Tina Turner in the Diary Room, along with all of her fellow housemates. With fellow housemate Jason, she formed a secret alliance which brought her to the final two of her season. Danielle and Jason are the only two people in Big Brother history to never be nominated at a nomination ceremony for the entire season.

In 2006, Danielle accepted an offer to appear on Big Brother: All Stars. She has been nominated twice so far, meaning Jason is the only person to never be nominated during their time playing Big Brother. She started the "Legion of Doom" alliance with fellow housemates Will Kirby, Mike Malin, and James Rhine to oust season six houseguest Janelle Pierzina. All plans to evict Janelle failed as she won the power of veto everytime she was nominated. The alliance fell short after a few weeks due to Will and Mikes backstabbing of both James and Danielle. She was then placed on the block by Erika Landin, next to Chicken George where she was evicted from the big brother house.

[edit] Eric Ouellette

Eric is a 25 year old firefighter from Milford, Connecticut. During the season, Eric became known for his sleeptalking habits, and on the show, his words and phrases were presented as subtitles on screen. Eric and fellow houseguest Lisa began a romantic affair, but Eric was evicted on Day 34, and the relationship dissolved after that.

[edit] Gerry Lancaster

Gerry is a 51 year old teacher from Glendale, California. Gerry is the first person ever to win the Power of Veto, and used it to save houseguest Marcellas. He was criticised in the house by some of the housemates because he did not wash his hands after going to the bathroom. He later decided to wash his hands. Gerry nominated lovebirds Eric and Lisa for eviction, and Eric was evicted on Day 34. Gerry himself was evicted on Day 55.

[edit] Jason Guy

Jason is a twenty-five year old videographer from Mobile, Alabama. A born-again Christian, Jason is a big fan of Big Brother. He and fellow housemate Danielle made a secret alliance and went through the entire season without being nominated. He came in third place, losing to Danielle and Lisa. Jason was evicted on Day 78.

[edit] Josh Feinberg

Josh is a waiter from Long Island, New York. He decided to try out for Big Brother because he wanted to win and play golf. Many of the housemates found Josh irritating. He was evicted on Day 41.

[edit] Chronology

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Power of Veto was used only once in this season. It was in the very first week when houseguest Gerry Lancaster, after a long-winded speech, vetoed the nomination of the black, gay houseguest, Marcellas Reynolds, on the grounds that he had accepted to nominate him because he was gay and because he was black.

Another twist was called Expect the Unexpected, in which, for the first time, a houseguest would be allowed back in the house by a group vote. The first four evictees competed against one another in a series of questions asked by host Julie Chen; subsequently, the choices were narrowed down to two: Eric Ouellette and Amy Crews. The swing vote, unbeknownst to the audience before the live vote, was Lisa Donahue, who had developed a romantic alliance with Eric. Lisa voted for Amy and she was allowed back in the game. Some houseguests tried to kick Amy out immediately, in a plan called Operation Revolving Door. Amy won Head of Household the first day back, and the plan failed.

Marcellas was also involved in one of the most shocking moments of the third season. The Head of Household that week, Jason Guy, had nominated Marcellas and Amy in a week where five contestants were reduced to four. In the final twist of the season, the last Power of Veto competition to be played had a special rule. If the nominee won the contest, they could save themselves from eviction, a rule that would become a staple in future seasons. When Marcellas won the veto contest, he had the option of saving himself. Trusting an alliance he seemed to have with Danielle Reyes, he made what continues to be regarded as the stupidest move in Big Brother history. He chose not to use the veto to save himself. Danielle voted to evict Marcellas, while Lisa cast her vote for Amy. Jason the Head of Household told Marcellas that he should have used the veto and cast the tie-breaking vote eliminating Marcellas.

Danielle and Lisa were the final two houseguests. Lisa won the jury vote with Jason the only houseguest to vote for Danielle. Many were upset with her countdown of contestants in her diary room sessions on eviction nights.

This season featured a guest appearance by singer Sheryl Crow in a special two-hour edition of the show that aired on August 21. Sheryl Crow and her band performed three songs for the houseguests in the backyard. This came as a big surprise for them with about a month left in the game.
