Big Banana
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Big Banana is a tourist attraction in the town of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales and consists of a large building in the shape of a banana. Many banana-related products are shown or sold, and the grounds of building are a banana plantation. Built in 1964, it was the first of Australia's Big Things.
The original Big Banana has been copied by the Big Bananas at Carnarvon, Western Australia and the Big Bunch of Bananas at Sawtell, New South Wales [1].
The Big Banana is an icon of the area - and a local factor of pride. The large recreational facilities attached to the statue are statistically measured the most popular leisure facilities on the Australian East Coast. - Especially the artificial ski slope competes with ski areas in New Zealand for visitor numbers and popularity. Whilst the locals describe it as being rather 'tacky'.
The Google Earth Link to this page is in the wrong spot, but a reasonably correct location can be seen by zooming in to 22km above Coffs Harbour and selecting the Big Banana photo by Brisbane Pom. Zooming down to 600m you can make out the yellow stripe of the Big Banana on the left side of the Pacific Highway, just above Brisbane Pom's button.
