Image copyright problem with Image:Bank of India Chennai Main.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bank of India Chennai Main.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. -- Longhair 09:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Mahuri - Copyright question

The following discussion is in response to the following message on 2nd February 2006:

Quote:
I have posted this message on the talk pages of all the current bureacrats:

I am seeking your guidance and advice on a particular issue. Mahuri page on wikipedia was initiated by me, and I have contributed to the page from time to time. As per policy of the wikipedia anyone can use the contents of wikipedia, but I understand that use of such contents should indicate the source, that is, the wikipedia. The contents of the page Mahuri have been used in the site mahurivaisya without giving any reference to wikipedia - though I am glad that they have used our contents. In this case, a problem may arise at a future date if that website takes a stand that the contents of page Mahuri on wikipedia have been copied from that site and thus violates copyrights. In an alternative scenario, a user here may tag our Mahuri page with copyright violation under the impression that our contents have been copied from that site, reference to which was given by me long back as an external link when that site was not active and having only a welcome page. Although I am not aware of any such issue, which wikipedians may have encountered in the past, I believe that such a situation may have arisen earlier too. I seek your advice and guidance to deal with this issue, which you are requested to please post on my talk page. I also utilize this opportunity to say Hello to you.<unquote>

--Bhadani 10:13, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

I found that the site under reference has since removed our contents. This matter may be treated as closed - however, such issues pertaining to other pages/ contents of wikipedia may surface from time to time. --Bhadani 16:13, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

An advice

I would suggest taking it to somewhere like WP:AN or the Village pump - I have seen questions like this, I know there is something of a form letter for dealing with this. Have a look at the Signpost - I recall several people following up plagiarism by a Hawaiian newspaper reporter. The edit history should protect us in the even of a challenge of copyright, but it would also be useful to put a note to that effect on the talk page to forestall anyone marking it as a copyvio. Guettarda 13:56, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Hello

Thank you so much for pointing that out to me. I will look into it and contact the website today. All the best. Danny 14:44, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Mahuri

Thank you for your very pleasant message. I notice you have already found the page Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks/Mno, which I would have suggested listing this issue on, however I would also suggest that you use the format as suggested at Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks as other users will find it easier to extract the necessary information they need from your statement that way. Best of luck with it, and if you need anything else please do not hesitate to get back in touch with me. -- Francs2000 15:59, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Copyright

Hello, Bhadani, glad to meet you! :)

As I see it, there is no problem that the site you mention could turn around and accuse Wikipedia of copyvio if the material is original to us/you. Although I am most familiar with U.S. law, I'm certain that prior use is a definitive defense to copyvio virtually anywhere in the world. Since all versions are preserved in our database, it is easy enough to prove we published it first.

As to taking action against the other site for not putting the Wikipedia as source, I imagine Wikimedia Foundation could send them a letter or even take legal action, but I have nothing to do with that and don't know how inclined Jimbo or whoever is to go after these issues.

It might be a good idea, as others have suggested, to put a note on the talk page about the infringing site to let them know that THEY are infinging US and not v.v. If anyone tries to speedy delete this as copyvio, let me (or most admins) know and I will look into it and comment or restore it as necessary. Cheers, Cecropia 16:43, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, it is a serious issue and we have to raise awareness. First try asking them to comply to our licence using a Wikipedia:Standard GFDL violation letter. See also Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks#Non-compliance process Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:35, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

My comments

I thank you all for suitably guiding me in the matter. I have few moments before posted these comments on the talk page of Mahuri:

Quote:
I am in the process of translating a book written in Hindi into English, and the book is named Mahuri Jati Ka Itihash (that is, the History of the Mahuri Caste). Moreover, I am also writing a book proposed to be named Mahuri, with sub-title of Mythology, Myths, and History. The contents which I have so far added here is a very small portion of the materials which I have about the Mahuris. A website named www.mahuri.com is owned by my family members. and that shall be activated at an appropriate time. I shall continue to add further contents to this page from time to time. Other users are also requested to contribute. Thanks.

I shall continue to take suitable steps as advised by you all, and now I will again concentrate on my other contributions to wikipedia. --Bhadani 10:08, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

My RFA

Hi Bhadani/Archive05, thanks for participating in my RfA discussion. Unfortunately, my fellow Wikipedians have decided at this time that I am not suitable to take on this additional responsibility, as the RfA failed with a result of 66/27/5 (71.0% support). If you voted in support of my request, thank you! If you decided to oppose me at this time, then I hope that if I do choose to reapply in the future, the effort I will make in the meantime to improve and expand my contributions to Wikipedia may persuade you to reconsider your position. Can I get you to help me with a mediation I'm conducting at Talk:Neuro-linguistic programming? I stepped in with an outside view and was immediately personally attacked. I need some administrator firepower watching my back while I do this. Also, since I'm planning on becoming an administrator once I have more experience on wikipedia, having one watch my first mediation attempt would be helpful knowledge for me. A Call for Assistance

Hi Bhadani; Since you were the first to welcome me to Wikipedia, I am writing to you for assistance. I would like to find out what I can do if I find myself arguing with someone who does not assume Wikiquette? I know that the user [Tcsh] has been reprimanded for his/her lack of abidance of Wikiquette before. If you have the time, please see the discussion under "Picture of Chomsky & Castro" at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Noam_Chomsky. Again, if you have the time to respond, please do not hesitate to be frank. Cheers! PJ 20:56, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Three weeks of admin tools

Today three weeks have passed since I was granted access to the administrator toolbox. During this time I have made use of it in the following way:

  • Protections and unprotections: 1
  • Blocks and unblocks: 4
  • Deletions and restorations: 69
  • Rollbacks: 246

I've found that the rollback tool is much more useful than I'd thought for vandalism patrol. In fact it makes that task so easy that I've been doing it more than before. On the other hand I've been surprised by how little the blocking tool is needed. Having done a significant amount of vandalism patrol I have still only blocked one solitary vandal. The great majority of addresses which send out a vandal edit do so only once. Those who do it more often usually stop after a warning or two. Only rarely is a block actually needed and in those cases someone usually beats me to it.

As a side note I haven't retired from writing articles either. I'm still hoping to bring Freyr up to featured status but even though I've already performed more edits on it than on Hrafnkels saga back in the day, a lot of work remains to be done. Community expectations for featured articles have gone up and so have my own ambitions. I'm currently waiting for a couple of books I ordered to arrive and then I may be able to make the final push.

I'm trying my best to live up to the trust you showed in me by supporting my RFA. If ever you feel uncertain whether I'm using the admin tools in the best interests of the project, let me know. I am at any time willing to relinquish the mop and reapply for it to address concerns people have and ensure that I'm not using the admin tools without being trusted to do so. Thanks a ton

Hello! Yes, I think that this is the first time I am talking to you. I really admire YOUR work on India related topics and you are also a great administrator. Keep up the good work! Siva1979Talk to me 15:25, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

re:adminship

Permit me to interfere in your discussion with Gurubrahma by saying that I consider user:Deeptrivia to be absolutely qualified and well-deserving for adminship. The man has impeccable standards regarding other users and his work. He is decent, often selfless and hardworking. He has done a fantastic job with Wikipedia:WikiProject History of India. I wanted to give him another barnstar, but didn't coz I've already given him two. Do consider him for a RFA. Rama's Arrow 16:15, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

You are most welcome to associate with this move. I do agree with you. Frankly, I was thinking about user:Deeptrivia for last few days. Let us do something fast: latest by next Monday. I shall surely be co-nominator. Please treat this as my support for him. --Bhadani 16:21, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
You or Gurubrahma should directly nominate him. Of course I'd support and help in any way possible, but an RFA from you or Gurubrahma will increase the credibility of the nomination - coming from qualified and respected administrators. Besides, you and Gurubrahma possess the tact and experience to manage an RFA.
Possible glitches - Deeptrivia might decline (please personally approach him over this); there are a bunch of trolls and problem users that he's encountered who will obstruct his nomination. But most Indian Wikipedians and a lot of others will rally - he commands a lot of respect. Rama's Arrow 16:33, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Just to add - there are three other people who come to mind, who are well-qualified: user:Sundar, user:Ganeshk and user:Miljoshi. Rama's Arrow 16:36, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
I have already requested user:Deeptrivia, and I have also taken up the matter with User:Sundar. --Bhadani 16:41, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks both of you! I really respect your appreciation for my work here. I have been really active only since November, and I do have some bad karma associated with my name from before that, which I have to undo. I will be really glad to share the responsibility of adminship, but I request you to please give me 2 - 3 more months to be ready for it before nomination. Feeling sorry about it, but I'm sure you will understand :) deeptrivia (talk) 16:52, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
I respect his thoughts, but his objections are baseless - please see my message on his talkpage. Rama's Arrow 17:01, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
My response to deeptrivia - it is really nice that you raised this point of Bad Karma. But, as I had told you in my message on your talk page; life is a flow, and changes always take place. I personally feel that by your continued positive contributions, you have proved your worth to the Project wikipedia. I do feel that you should come forward, and face the challenge. Yet, I respect your sentiments, but I am still awaiting your renewed response. Please think over the matter in a day or two. Please. --Bhadani 17:08, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Hey Bhadani, what do you think about my proposal on Rama's Arrow's talkpage? Thanks! deeptrivia (talk) 17:13, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Bhadaniji - I reiterate that user:Sundar, user:Miljoshi and user:Ganeshk are excellent candidates for the job. But I'll leave it to you and Gurubrahma. Rama's Arrow 17:33, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Oh baba, Sundar is already an administrator. I have also taken up the issue of Deep's "karma" with a more experienced user and administrator User:Tony Sidaway [4]. I think that such issues should be resolved in the larger interest of the Project. If necessary, I shall raise the point for comments from other users too. And, OK - Let us give Deep and opportunity to wait for few more weeks as desired by him. I also agree with your choices, and shall request Gurubrahma to offer his comments too. --Bhadani 17:38, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Deeptrivia Rfa

Hi Bhadani. I generally consider Deeptrivia to be a good editor with a lot of energy. And I personally feel that a little bad karma in one's early days shouldn't come in the way of one's adminship. Gurubrahma's expectations seem to more realistic and appropriate for an admin. Let me look into it on Monday. By the way, believe it or not, I have even more bad karma than him. See my full disclosure in reply to the third question at User:Sundar/Admin related/my adminship election. That didn't come in the way my Rfa. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:26, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I am giving pasting below my request for advice to Tony Sidaway on his talk page on 17.02.2006 and his comments:

Quote
Hello Tony, User:Mel Etitis and you spotted me on wikipedia. You also encouraged me by awarding me an exceptional new comer barnstar. Now after about one year of my association with the Project, I have found several nice editors: one of them is deeptrivia and I wish him to nominate or co-nominate for adminship with some other editor/s who are familiar with him and his works. However, Deep (a Sanskrit word meaning “light” or one who gives light) is thinking of a particular dark moment of his life as a wikipedian. I seek your advice and comments on the issue. Is not he fit for the admin responsibility? Is the burden of one block has washed out all his contributions to the project? Kindly give your suggestions on my talk page. Thanks.

Tony's response:

Look at this:

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Aaron Brenneman
Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Aaron Brenneman (second nomination)

People do redeem themselves from dark moments, with good will and hard work. I wish your friend well and I know that with your help he will do good work for Wikipedia.

Zero' response on Tony's talk page:

Indeed. I believe people should assume good faith. Humans are learning creatures, and they make mistakes and change. People should not be held accountable for past mistakes. This years vandal could turn into one of wikipedia's best contributors. Just remain optimistic.

Sakastan

Most references limit Sakastan to Sistan province of Iran. The term looks like a neologism anyway. That Rajputs were "accepted in Hinduism" in return of their support of "Hindu" "crusades" against Buddhism is a pure fantasy. Never heard of such armed conflicts. deeptrivia (talk) 17:52, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I think you are referring to my addition in Rajput page:
They were accepted in Hinduism as Raj-put (children of the kings) caste of Kashatriyas after their support of Hindu crusade against Buddhism (see Decline And Fall Of Buddhism (in India)).
I have added the citation from Dr. Ambedkar website. The Rapjputs were Sakas, Kushans, Indo-Greeks and other groups that have invaded and settled in northern part of South Asia. They were actually accepted into Hinduism after they joined with Brahmins in suppression of Buddhism. I am willing to hear the alternative versions of the same events with open mind.

Sakastan

Bhadani, can you please cleanup the Sakastan page and rewrite only relevent and reliable sources. I just don't want this controversy to go on and create any bad feelings. I only knew that Sakastan extended from Afghanistan to western Uttar Pradesh, with twin capials at Peshawar and Mathura, ruled and settled by Sakas, Kushan, Indo-Greeks, etc. They later were accepted into Hinduism as Rajputs. I am not a expert on this issue and I only this from reading info on Internet. I had no agenda or hidden motive. So please you take it over and rewrite it so that it does not raise any controversy.

Siddiqui 16:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

My dear Siddiqui saheb, bhaijaan (brother), please do not feel so bad – I believe in you and I always appreciate your contributions to the Project wikipedia. Bihar

Thanks for your notes re my edit to the Bihar article ... as you spotted I of course know next to nothing about Bihar (or I did before I read the article) ... and I only found it because of that phrase "is one of the leading" which is often - but of course not always - a marker of POV. I still find it hard to accept that we can say College X, followed by College Y ... is the ranking really so indisputably established. It just doesn't feel NPOV to me. Anyhow, I'll defer to one more knowledgeable. Thanks again for taking the time to write something on my talk page. DogsBreakfast 16:20, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

It is a general comment and not directed against any particular person. Let us enjoy our wiki-life and in the process let us continue to add value to the Project wikipedia. --Bhadani 16:00, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

thanks and help!

Hehehehe....Thank you for your compliments. I must thank you even as I thank Gurubrahma - I never cease to be amazed at your unfailing compassion. You are the closest to Rama that we've got here - really. Thank you.

Please check out Wikipedia:Defense of content: I've proposed some interesting measures to help fight vandalism. I request your participation in the debate and contributions for improvement. Rama's Arrow 16:07, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I shall surely participate. I am not the Rama the God, I am a simple human being. --Bhadani 16:16, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

With apologies for the impersonal AWB-ness of the message... Thanks for your support on my recent request for adminship. It passed at 91/1/0, and I hope I can continue to deserve the community's trust. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you, and if I make a mistake be sure to tell me. My talk page is always open. (ESkog)(Talk) 02:38, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your voting!

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your voting on my RFA. It has finished with the result 88/14/9, and I am promoted. I am really overwhelmed with the amount of support I have got. With some of you we have edited many articles as a team, with some I had bitter arguments in the past, some of you I consider to be living legends of Wikipedia and some nicks I in my ignorance never heard before. I love you all and I am really grateful to you.

If you feel I can help you or Wikipedia as a human, as an editor or with my newly acquired cleaning tools, then just ask and I will be happy to assist. If you will feel that I do not live up to your expectation and renegade on my promises, please contact me. Maybe it was not a malice but just ignorance or a short temper. Thank you very much, once more! abakharev 07:34, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

National dish

Hi, I've noticed there is no entry for India in National dish. Would you be interested in filling the gap? :-) --BorgQueen 15:05, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

I understand the difficulty but if Chinese can do it, you can do it too. --BorgQueen 15:56, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi!

Hello Bhadani. I just checked your post on my talk page. I am a new wikipedian, and feel honoured to be contacted by another Indian Wikipedian. More so, because I feel that Nicalp has been inactive for quite a while. I am a student of law (which you must have noticed on my page). Maybe we could correspond through email. My email address is: [[5]] —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Anirudhsbh (talkcontribs).

Everyone was new here once upon a time! --Bhadani 17:17, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Kundan Amitabh

I too share your concerns; Due to the length of the article I deemed it better to err on the side of discretion by listing it on AFD rather than speedying it or {{PROD}}-ding it. You may want to place your vote on that page. You really do a great job in finding such articles. --Gurubrahma 14:35, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

This is the link. --Gurubrahma 14:46, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for giving the link. I have voted a delete - we surely work on the same wavelength. --Bhadani 14:50, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

GURKHA

Dear Bhadani,

I will be free after March 30th so I would love to take you up on the offer of working and guiding me through the completion of the Gurkha article.

There is some new chap (with no profile, only a name) who has begun editing the history section with his opinion based on a single book (a single source does not make a good solid base).

I don't think he understands that I not only come from the family in question but have also studied my family history in University. Also the book he is using is highly inaccurrate in its discussion of who the Gurkhas are.

I would highly appreciate it if you could keep an eye on the article as well, until I finish my exams on March 30th.

Sincerely,

Sumerendra

Indian admins?

Sadly, I've lost touch with most editors. Some old hands such as Deeptrivia and Idleguy come to mind. Saravask is another possible candidate. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:08, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Bhadani, you may be interested in this. Tintin has not shown an interest in adminship (yet), deeptrivia prefers to wait and Ganeshk is on a wikibreak. Djr xi's second nom is going to fail from the current looks of it. So, we'll have to wait for Idleguy to make up his mind, may be you can prevail on him. He would stand a good chance now with Kargil War becoming an FA. Both Rama's Arrow and Saravask have too many edits/page - I may be in a position to vote for them but not nominate them esp., Saravask, till I review their contribs fully. Just found that Saravask has around 1400 edits on Hugo Chavez alone and has also >10 edits/page; also, I have not interacted with him afaik. DaGizza may be another good editor, but he is still in his teens, so again, I'd like to look at his contribs in depth. So, in the near term, it looks like Idleguy followed by Ganeshk/deeptrivia, but I'd like you to give a push ;) to Idleguy. --Gurubrahma 19:03, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Its always refreshing to see one's work getting appreciated, especially by an admin. I look forward to contributing more to Wikipedia. If you need any help, leave a message. My interests include Science and Technology, India and current affairs; although I can help on almost anything using common sense and Google. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 16:40, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

I do the same. --Bhadani 16:42, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanx...

...for the appreciation on Kargil War's elevation to FA status. Hopefully, if I continue to remain idle I'll try to bring a few more controversial articles to FA status. Idleguy 05:10, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Rajput

Thank god you are working on the Rajput page, I thought it was going to the pits until I saw your name. I am not allowed to edit the Rajput page since I protested at the attitude and insults thrown by an admin at the Indian side, which is sad since this was an area I know a lot about. I was also galod to see new names since the Rajput article touches too close to home for me. Again thak god I saw your name. Gorkhali 07:49, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

I will try to give edits that reflect the reality. --Bhadani 17:41, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Querry regarding Red Links

Hi,

I seem to be in an interesting discussion with another user. He feels that Red Links (links to articles that don't exist) should be removed because it frustrates readers. On the other hand, I maintain that Red Links are an indication that the author feels that the article in question is important and a red link serves as an indication, encouraging users to expand them into articles. Please clarify as an admin on it as to what does official Wikipedia Policy says on it.

Just so we're clear here, I do not spend time going around removing redlinks. I explained my position on Ambuj Saxena's talk page, I had thought quite clearly. Ifnord 18:52, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Also, earlier in the day, I nominated an article called Gance for deletion (AfD) as non-notable organization. The person who wrote the article seems to have got hurt and he/she has removed the AfD label saying that it is a well known organization. I feel you will be better to handle this issue as the user might have something against me and personally and I feel that a third party should address it. The reason why I nominated is that I was not able to isolate its reference in Google as it is a very common word, morover the tone suggested that it was a vanity article (refer to the version just before I tagged it). I may be wrong, but that's all the AfD discussion is for. The article has been improved a bit since then, but there will be inconsistancy as the AfD label is no longer there. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 14:46, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you are correct about the Red Links as they serve a purpose. However, no article should be loaded with unusual number of red Links unless they are significant. As regards Gance, I will do the needful if required. Let us wait for few days to see how the contents develop. --Bhadani 14:52, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Vandal warnings

I've noticed that instead of using the normal templates, you've simply been telling users "Please do something constructive here". You really should consider using a template such as {{subst:test1}} instead, so it is more specific to the user's actions, and removes any considerable doubt about what you actually meant. Thanks. -Mulder416 15:58, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Ok. --Bhadani 16:00, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Lothal FAC

Hi Bhadaniji - please take a bit of time to vote up-or-down at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Lothal. Its finally FAC!! Rama's Arrow 05:59, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Regarding adminship

Hello, after some thought I've decided I'll accept the nomination for adminship. I'm not as idle as before, but I think I can still do justice to the post. However, people who may have had issues with me in the past on some of the most contentious articles might oppose me given that I often love to work on the "controversial" ones. In my defence, most if not all, of the irksome edits/facts I have made anywhere in Wikipedia have reliable sources. That said, let's hope for the best. Cheers. Idleguy 08:09, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Bhadaniji, I have already voted for Idleguy even though he has not accepted it, because I may not be online for the next few days. Please remove it if it is not appropriate. Tintin (talk) 15:04, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
It might be better to wait for him to answer the questions before putting it in Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. Tintin (talk) 15:53, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

My RFA

Thank you for supporting my successful request for adminship. I'll try to put the admin tools to good and responsible use. If I do anything wrong you know where to find me. Raven4x4x 08:41, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
