IMDb profile

Beyond the Sea (2004) is an English language German-based production from Lions Gate Films about singer Bobby Darin (1936-1973).

The film stars Kevin Spacey as Darin. Spacey, who produced, directed, and did all of his own singing, had for years longed to produce a bio-picture about Darin. With funding from Lions Gate and German production company QI Quality International GmbH & Co., the film was finally finished in 2004 and premiered that year at the Toronto International Film Festival.

[edit] Trivia

  • Kevin Spacey notes on the DVD commentary that his biggest hope was that the film would reintroduce Bobby Darin's music to a whole new generation of fans. He went on to note that shortly after the film's release, sales of Darin's music went up over 150%.
  • One mistake to notice in the film: When 'Bobby' chases his son out of his bathroom, the wall can clearly be seen wobbling when Darin bangs it.
  • Another error is when 'Bobby' takes his anger of failing to win an Oscar out on his car with a golf club. After stalling the car's engine, he switches the headlights off and gets out. But when we see him approach the front of the car to smash the headlamps, they are on.
  • Kevin Spacey does his own singing and dancing in the film.
  • Kate Bosworth's role as Sandra Dee in this film allowed her to be cast as Lois Lane in Superman Returns, after Spacey recommended her to his friend, the director Bryan Singer. Spacey appears in the role of villain Lex Luthor in the same film.
