Beyond Paradise is a 1998 independent feature film directed by David L. Cunningham.

The film is a semi-autobiographical tale of Cunningham and his high school friends growing up on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Under the working title of "Kama'aina", the movie was filmed with a modest budget from Dec. 26th, 1996-Feb. 5th, 1997.

The story follows the life of Mark Thompson as he leaves Los Angeles and moves with his mother to the Big Island and befriends three "locals" in Ronnie, Zulu and Keao all the while encountering bullies and harassment for being a "haole" or foreigner.

The movie premiered at the Honolulu International Film Festival in November of 1997.

After a few screenings in L.A. there was additional footage shot. Additional scenes were shot involving Mark's father and his friends in L.A. to give a little more background into the character of Mark Thompson. The scenes were added and the film had a limited theatrical release in 1999. It did well at the box office in Hawaii, and Variety Magazine touted that it beat The Matrix in ticket sales in Hawaii.^{[citation needed]}

The DVD did not come out until 2003 and the DVD does not have the scenes that were added for the 1999. The DVD features no extras, no commentaries; featuring only the theatrical trailer.
