Bethlehem, Indiana

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bethlehem is a town in northeast Clark County, Indiana, situated along the Ohio River, close to the county line with Jefferson County, Indiana. It was platted in 1812, presumably named for Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, according to WPA records.

Its first office was established on March 6, 1816. At Christmastime, many go the post office to have their Christmas letters have a Bethlehem postmark, as Jesus was born in the Israeli town of Bethlehem.

In Darrel Bigham's 2006 book On Jordan's Banks: emancipation and its aftermath in the Ohio River Valley the author quotes Marion B. Lucas' A History of Blacks in Kentucky (p.110) which states that the Underground Railroad was active in the Madison, IN area "from Bethlehem to Brooksburg on the Indiana side of the Ohio River."
