Founded in 1881 as a preparatory school, the college now has an enrollment of 500 students from 27 states and 12 foreign countries, and offers programs in education, the sciences, and pre-professional areas. One famous tradition at Bethany is performing Handel's Messiah each year at Easter, an event that dates back to 1882. On the campus grounds can be found the Birger Sandzén memorial gallery, an art gallery dedicated to the artist Birger Sandzén, who taught there for many years.

One of the top academic colleges in the nation, Bethany students often find themselves in class sizes of less than ten.

The Bethany College Men's golf team also held one of the longest winning streaks in all of college sports; winning the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship from 1994-2005.
