Betfair Chase

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Betfair Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses run over a distance of 3 miles (4,828 metres) at Haydock Park Racecourse in November. There are eighteen fences to be jumped in the race.

The race was introduced in 2005, and with prizemoney totalling £200,000 for the 2006 race, it has already become the fourth most valuable chase of the season, behind the Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Queen Mother Champion Chase, and equal with the King George VI Chase.

It is sponsored by the online betting company Betfair, and is the first leg of the Betfair Million series. The second leg is either the King George VI Chase at Kempton or the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown, and the final leg is the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Any horse which can win all three legs will win a £1,000,000 bonus prize. Kauto Star won this prize in 2006/07 by winning the King George and Gold Cup as well as the Betfair Chase.
