BET Awards

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on BET.

Actress/comidienne Mo'Nique hosted the first BET Awards in 2001. Actor/rapper Will Smith co-hosted the 2005 BET Awards with his wife actress/rock musician Jada Pinkett Smith.

The 2006 BET Awards were held on June 28 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California and hosted by Damon Wayans. It was the highest rated telecast in the BET networks history. Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Mary Mary, and T.I., among others performed. Busta Rhymes performed his singles "I Love My Bitch" and "Touch It". R&B and hip hop singers Kelis, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Rah Digga, Missy Elliott, Papoose, and Eminem accompanied him.

The 2007 BET Awards are expected to nominate more non-African American entertainers including Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, and Robin Thicke.
