Best of both worlds (saying)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In a decision making process with two seemingly mutually exclusive or at least contradictatory influences, the finding of an option which satisfies both driving forces, may be said to be a solution that is the best of both worlds. We start off with two criteria for success and assumptions are made dictating that any gain with respect to one is offset to some extent by a loss with respect to the other. An action which forces an abandonment of these assumptions by fulfilling both criteria (or in the continuous case making great both measures of success) is said to be a way of getting the best of both worlds.

[edit] Hovis

Hovis, a UK bread producing company, recently used the saying in naming its Best of Both range. Marketed at those who prefer the taste of white bread but consider brown to be healthier, its first advert featured a pair of siblings arguing as to which type of bread was better. They then found the Best of Both bread to have both desired qualities. This serves as an example of the phrase in use.

In Pop Culture The Hannah Montana show's theme song sung by Miley Cyrus is titled "Best of Both Worlds."
