Besart Berisha (born on July 29, 1985 in Priština, Kosovo, by then part of Yugoslavia) is a Kosovar-Albanian footballer. A striker, 1.84m tall and weighing 77kg, he plays for the Albania national football team and Hamburger SV of German Bundesliga at club level.

[edit] Biography

Besart Berisha was born in Kosovo, but left the country as a child to escape the war when he moved to Germany. From 1994 to 2004 Berisha played with German youth teams Berliner VB49, BFC Dynamo, TSV Lichtenberg and Tennis Borussia Berlin. In 2004 he started his professional career when he signed for Hamburger SV. Because of his young age, he was loaned out to Aalborg Boldspilklub (AaB) in the Danish Superliga championship. Despite scoring 14 goals for AaB's reserve team, he saw very limited playing time at AaB, due to the emergence of striker Simon Bræmer. He moved on to Superliga club AC Horsens on another loan deal, where he became the club's league top scorer, with 11 goals during the 2005-06 Superliga season. In the summer of 2006 Besart Berisha returned to his club in Germany and signed a new four-year contract with Hamburger SV.

Berisha received an Albanian passport in September 2006. He played his first game for the Albania national football team a few weeks later, on October 11 against the Netherlands.

On December 6, 2006 Besart Berisha became the first Albanian ever to score a goal in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League by also scoring his first goal for his club Hamburger SV in the match against CSKA Moskva at home in Hamburg, Germany.
