Berta and Elmer Hader

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berta Hoerner (1890?–February 6, 1976) and Elmer Stanley Hader (September 7, 1889-September 7, 1973) were a husband-and-wife team that illustrated more than 70 children's books, about half of which they also wrote. Their most notable contribution to children's literature was in 1949, when they won the Caldecott Medal for The Big Snow. Berta was born in San Pedro, Coahuila, Mexico, and attended the University of Washington, and the California School of Design, while Elmer was born in Pajaro, California, and also attended the California School of Design. They met there, married in 1919, and started publishing in 1928 with The Picture Book of Travel. Their work is noted for not anthropomorphizing the many animals they used in their books, unlike their contemporaries.
