Bernice MacNaughton High School, or simply BMHS (formally known as Dr. L. Bernice MacNaughton High School, or LBMHS) is a high school in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada situated at 999 St. George Blvd. It was founded in 1975 as a trade school, accommodating 1400 students. It turned into the MacNaughton Science & Technology Center (M.S.T.C.) in 1994 and was reestablished as a high school in 1999, consisting only of grade 9 students.[1] 2003 saw the first graduating class of BMHS, as well as the school finally housing grades 9-12. By the end of 2003, the building had received a multi-million dollar renovation, which saw the addition of a newly built gymnasium, as well as many new classrooms being added along with older classrooms being refurbished. By 2005, a new roof for the school's cafeteria had been completed, the auditorium under went a face lift, making the facility more up to date with new technologies.

[edit] Name

Bernice MacNaughton High School was named after Dr. L. Bernice MacNaughton, a Moncton teacher.[1]

Bernice MacNaughton High School is "unofficially" know under a number of different names including Bernice MacNaughton, MacNaughton, as well as Bernie Mac. Its sports teams have often referred to themselves as "the Mean Green", "the Fight Club" (stemming from the school's "Fight Song") and "the Green Monster", and students "Green Monsters", after a few members of the Grade 10 class coined the catch phrases in 2001.

[edit] School Improvement Plan

These last major additions/upgrades were all part of the school's forth and final structural phase of the BMHS School Improvement Plan, whose draft was started in early 2001, with the full outline first being completed on May 21, 2003, which consisted of 4 phases. The final cosmetic plans of Phase 4 were originally set to include extensive landscaping and the addition of lighting spanning the entrance of the school's long driveway, although focus has since shifted away from these areas and has been focused on other areas that are viewed as having greater importance (this is not to say these parts of the phase will never be addressed). Also, the original long-term plans of Phase 4 saw a proposed change in the location of the school's entrance (which is located on St. George, directly before a busy on-ramp/intersection). The proposed change would facilitate the flow of traffic. Preliminary independent traffic studies on this matter had been conducted. However, no conclusive results had been reached. It is unknown if this matter is still under consideration. However, it should be mentioned that traffic lights have since been installed down the street from the school's entrance, showing a positive effect on the traffic flow and pace.

The Bernice MacNaughton School Improvement Plan was first drafted with the aide of School District 2, under supervision of Jim Stevenson, the District Education Council (DEC), members of the school's Student Parent Advisory Committee (SPAC), under the leadership of Chairman Robin Craig, Ms. Susan Ross (Principal 1999-2004), Mr. Jack Powers (Vice-Principal 1999-2005), and various other community leaders, all of whom collaborated on this extensive project.

[edit] School Atmosphere

It is also within walking distance of the city's own walking trails as well as Centennial Park.

The school itself has an open design, with open foyers and a large, central cafeteria. The gymnasium features separate parking and entrances for special functions. The large auditorium is capable of handling fully orchestrated productions.

It is largely due to the hard work, enthusiasm, spirit and dedication of the District 2 School Board, the School's staff, along with its 1999 Grade 9 class (being the only Grade in the school at the time), parents and various community leaders, that the foundation of BMHS in many areas, including its core values and traditions, along with many of its programs, exist today.
