Bernardus Johannes Alfrink

Bernardus Johannes Cardinal Alfrink (Nijkerk, July 5, 1900 - Nijmegen, December 16, 1987) was an Archbishop of Utrecht. He was ordained Priest on August 15, 1924 by Archbishop Henricus van de Wetering. On May 28, 1951, he was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Utrecht and Titular Archbishop of Tyana and consecrated July 17, 1951, by the Apostolic Internuncio Paolo Giobbe. Promoted to Archbishop of Utrecht on October 31, 1955, he became also Military vicar of Netherlands, on April 16, 1957. Pope John XXIII created him Cardinal Priest of the Title of S. Gioacchino ai Prati di Castello, in the Consistory of March 28, 1960 .

During the Second Vatican Council he was member of Board of Presidency from 1962 to 1965. Attended the Ordinary Assembly of World Synod of Bishops of 1967, 1971 and 1974; the Extraordinary Assembly of World Synod in 1969. On December 6, 1975 he retired from the pastoral government of the Archdiocese.

Participated in three conclaves, of 1963 and in both of August and October 1978. On July 5, 1980 he turned 80 years and lost the right to participate in the Conclave.

He died in Nijmegen and was buried at St. Catharina metropolitan cathedral, Utrecht.
