"Berhampur - The Silk City" is a city located in the eastern coastline of Indian in the state of Orissa. It is one of the oldest and biggest cities of Orissa. It is famous for its Silk, Temples and its culture. It is also famous as the commercial capital of Orissa. The latest estiamte of the population of the city is 307,724 (2001 census) making it the third most populous urban area in the state and 113th overall in India.

The city's Sanskrit name which is still in use is Brahmapur which got distorted into Berhampur.

[edit] The City's Atmosphere

Berhampur is the primary railhead for nearby tourist destinations. It serves as a node for the nearby small towns and villages, so trade is predominant. A majority of the people are self-employed in varied businesses of different scales. Berhampur is well known for its intricately designed silk sarees, handloom cloth and Jewellery shops. Berhampur is known as the "Silk City". The most important destination in Berhampur is Gopalpur sea beach which is located just 15KM away from Berhampur.

Lifestyle of the people is laid back, with modernity limited to youngsters of the town.

It is a city of passionate cinegoers, famous for huge cinema theatre complexes. Some of the most famous movie theatres include Gautam, Rukmini, Shiva, Shakti, Payal and Paramjyoti. Hindi movies are the most popular, followed by Oriya movies. English and Telugu movies are shown on a regular basis.

Because of its proximity to the state of Andhra Pradesh, a good proportion of the population is conversant in both Oriya and Telugu languages.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Brahmapur had a population of 289,724. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Brahmapur has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 83% and female literacy of 64%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Indulging in fast food is a part of the Berhampur lifestyle. Some of the well known restaurants are The Fun & Food Villege, Girija Restaurant,Hotel Moti , Mayurya Hotel, Merrydine,Hotel city palace,Hotel Nandan and Jyoti Residency. There are a numerous dhabas located in the outskirts of the city, lined along the National Highway 5. The breakfast is another interesting phenomenon here, A majority of people eat their breakfast outside their homes. There are numerous small eateries located along the length and breadth of the city that serve typical, lip-smacking food for breakfast, which is an interesting mix of the North Indian and South Indian food styles. In the evening people like to enjoy fast foods like soup, chow mine, & Egg-chicken Rolls.

"Chicken Pakoras" of Girija restaurant which is located in the heart of the city (on Girija Square) is the main atttraction . One could also try its Chicken Kurma and of course the Caramel Pudding. If its summer, one should try the "Local Lassi" from any of the stalls/small shops along the main roads.

Personal means of transport include bicycles, two wheelers and cars. Paid means include rickshaws, matador minivans, trekkers and private buses.

People generally stay in independent houses. Lately, several multi-storied apartment complexes are mushrooming up in the city.

Its is one of the most developed cities in Orissa as most of the people are educated and Technology is a prime attraction here. You will be able to locate internet cafes, Video game parlours almost everywhere.

One of the major Real Estate organization is Mayuree Towers located at Girija Square. Currently high rise buildings and apartments are becoming common.
