[edit] Taipei American School

Im sure it's much appreciated that you guys keep a watch on the page. But PLEASE check what you're deleting. I've added a new club and a link to a club and neither are vandalism yet you still delete them. Manual_combat

Coach Potato's Sanctuary is a real club? --BenjaminTsai 02:55, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, it is. Manual_combat happens to be the President of that club. -- TAS Student 19:40, 03 December 2005 (UTC)
Is that so. What does this, presumably recognized, club do?--BenjaminTsai 08:25, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
You can check the discussion page to TAS Student Organizations for the answer to that one. Although I'm not sure the club still exists :) -- TAS Student 23:59, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your edits to TAS, they look good. I'm still not sure that Daisy Yang belongs without further reasons why it's notable. Allegations by a single student or family simply aren't that notable. Where I live they just arrested a girl for planning an alleged Columbine style attack, and I'm not sure it's notable to the school. Wikibofh 15:15, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

(Oh...um...I forgot...can you look at the sports and organization section...it looks like you got caught mid edit...as one organization is titled Debug ... and the formatting is off....) Wikibofh 15:18, 8 May 2005 (UTC)
I also do not believe that Daisy Yang belongs in the article.. but I can see the argument being made for it. It was a highly publicized event at the time, though for some reason I cannot find any articles referencing it today anymore. --BenjaminTsai 13:15, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
Ok, so what does the Orphanage club actually do? Make orphans? Seems kind of cruel.  :) Wikibofh 20:34, 10 May 2005 (UTC)
Orphanage Club raises money and donates gifts for orphanages in Taiwan. They also teach English to kids at a School for the Blind. Doesn't seem very cruel to me. Or to TAS students, for that matter. I'd say about 50% of the high school students are members. --TAS Student 19:53, 03 December 2005 (UTC)
I suspect Wikibofh was making what is known as a joke. --BenjaminTsai Talk 17:27, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I have taken discrete math courses and graduate level randomness and computation courses at UC Berkeley and the material taught in Taiwan local junior highs is far more advanced. Lol at TAS competing with local schools.

I've had the opportunity to enjoyed my share of discrete and logic courses as a Computer Science major at Carnegie Mellon, though I admit I focused on robotics instead of computational theory. To claim that people are teaching college level discrete classes in your average middle school in Taipei (or anywhere else in the world for that matter) is rediculous. Please back up your claim with the syllabus, or at least a phone number to the middle school in question. --BenjaminTsai Talk 03:09, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

The junior high in question is http://www.msjh.tp.edu.tw/msjh92/index.htm , and the discrete math course is math 55 at UC Berkeley. the material taught at the junior high is clearly more advanced.

So you're claiming these middle school students should be able to do this final easily? --BenjaminTsai Talk 17:21, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

If is translated into Chinese, they should, with some preparation equivalent to college students studying for a final, be able to do it the same, or better, as students at UC Berkeley. I know people fro MSJH who have observed that their junior high math classes are equivalent to Math 55. That final doesnt even include modular arithmetic and number theory, which is included in the syllabus of the junior high students.

[edit] Taipei American School article vandalism

There's this certain anonymous user who keeps on vandalising the TAS article. Please help us be on the lookout for that user and make the necessary reverts. Allentchang 05:10, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Anon user and Stuy

He is doing the same thing at Bronx Science and not obeying warnings. Tfine80 23:48, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Yes, but it's hard to tell if he's genuinely malicious or just does not understand the Wikipedia process. --BenjaminTsai 00:40, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mediation

Just wondering if you could expand your request a little bit - where the IP has been editing, which edits you disagree with, what you think is wrong with them, that sort of thing! Dan100 (Talk) 15:54, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Alright, though the disputes are outlined already on the the talk page of the article under "NPOV dispute". It seems though that the IP has has stopped participating. --BenjaminTsai Talk 16:37, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
It seems that I spoke to soon, anon appears to be back as User:Bobbydoop. --BenjaminTsai Talk 16:50, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
I can't believe they are refusing to ban this guy Bobbydroop. The mess he is leaving with 2 or 3 user accounts and multiple IP's is spread all over the place. He has now vandalized my user page 2 times, and it is ridiculous to call these edits "content disputes." On St. John's University, his edit was "St. John's was also rocked with another sports scandal. It's table tennis team was banned from post season play after 5 of its players were caught abusing steroids. Star player Delon Smith said "I I I I I I I I I I I I thought it was just Vitamin C, I I I I I I I I I I I I I did did didn't mean to do it". The guy is obviously a vandal. Tfine80 02:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm afraid this is just one of those potentially ambiguous cases. I've nominated Bobbydoop for 3RR violation. --BenjaminTsai Talk 03:28, 29 December 2005 (UTC) Withdrew nomination to prevent escalation. --BenjaminTsai Talk 04:23, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Zh-s

Hi, This appears to be a duplicate of Template:Zh-sp. -- Curps 01:30, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, made a mistake with the edit. It's not a duplicate. --BenjaminTsai Talk 01:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 3RR warning

In reference to Stuyvesant High School : Please do not keep undoing other people's edits without discussing them first. This is considered impolite and unproductive. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia under the three-revert rule, which states that nobody may revert an article to a previous version more than three times in 24 hours. (Note: this also means editing the page to reinsert an old edit. If the effect of your actions is to revert back, it qualifies as a revert.) Thank you. ≈ jossi ≈ t@ 04:37, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Jossi, we have not broken the three-revert rule. If you look at the edit history and read the NPOV dispute section on talk, you'll see that Bobbydoop is the one that has wiped our our edits (updates to infobox, npov tag, compromised admission section, award count, etc.) with his reverts to an even older revision. My reverts were to undo his reverts to bring back the changes he wiped out. --BenjaminTsai Talk 04:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bobbydoop and 3RR

Hi David, sorry about the trouble for Bobbydoop. I'm not convinced that he is following Wikipedia etiquette, but I may [have] nominated him for 3RR too soon. We'll see if we can work it out in a hopefully less confrontational manner. --BenjaminTsai Talk 04:43, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

On the contrary, Bobbydoop was repeatedly warned, and deliberately violated the 3RR on no fewer than four different articles (possibly more). I encourage you to continue discussing this matter on the user's talk page, but I'm not prepared to lift the block until I'm convinced that he/she truly intends to behave responsibly. —David Levy 04:52, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Alright. --BenjaminTsai Talk 08:30, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] {{zh-c}}

Hi, please note that this template is used when both the traditional and simplified are identical, so please stop changing all of them. Thanks. -- Миборовский U|T|C|E|Chugoku Banzai! 06:09, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

And would you self-revert them all, so that I don't have to. (Gives you a load of free edits, too!) Thanks. -- Миборовский U|T|C|E|Chugoku Banzai! 06:12, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Hmm.. I'll stop converting them. But I would like to hash this out more. I feel that even when both are identical, it's still fairly simple to determine which one is more appropriate based on context. Having the option to not specify whether the character is traditional or simplified means users may end up using this template when typing in characters that are not the same under the assumption that by default "Chinese" is means one character set or the other. An alternative that still removes ambiguity but preserves the .. space saving efficiency? .. is the creation of another template, perhaps zh-u to denote specifically cases where both simplified and traditional are the same. Let me know what you think. --BenjaminTsai Talk 06:17, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
As an aside, I did come across a one or two instances where zh-c was used for characters that were not identical across simplified and traditional. Sooo, I'm not the only one that didn't grasp full purpose of zh-c. :-) --BenjaminTsai Talk 06:21, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
OK, thanks a lot. I'll try to explain this.
{{zh-s}} gives Simplified Chinese: 简体. {{zh-t}} gives Traditional Chinese: 正體. {{zh-c}} gives Chinese: 中文. Now, there is simply no "simplified" way to write "中文", nor is there any "traditional" way to write it. It simply is, "中文". To be considered a "simplified character", something must have a traditional version - or else what is there to be simplified about? So in case where usages in both simplified and traditional script (script as compared to characters/words) is the same, there is no traditional or simplified versions of the same word. The word is the same for 2 different scripts, but the word is identical nevertheless. And the word, therefore, is neither "traditional" nor "simplified", it's "Chinese".
Oh and if you come across usages where there are differences between the simplified and traditional characters, feel free to change them accordingly. -- Миборовский U|T|C|E|Chugoku Banzai! 06:37, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm, yes having lived in R.O.C. for a number of years, I understand the difference between traditional and simplified character set. :-) What I ment was, the template zh-c does not make it clear that it should only used for when traditional and simplified overlap. So, I'm proposing we rename/move zh-c to something like zh-u, in which the very name of the template suggests that it should only be used for instances where simplified and traditional are uniform --BenjaminTsai Talk 06:42, 29 December 2005 (UTC).
About zh-t and zh-s, they didn't exist until I created them earlier today, so there was only zh-c. This means it wasn't possible to use a template to only display Traditional or Simplified prior to today. --BenjaminTsai Talk 07:13, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
We can just clarify on the {{zh-c}} page. As for {{zh-t}} and {{zh-s}}, most of us throws in both systems AND Pinyin as well, so we mainly use {{zh-tsp}} or {{zh-ts}}/{{zh-st}} if we don't need Pinyin, and use {{zh-cp}} or {{zh-c}} if they're the same. So {{zh-t}} and {{zh-s}} are kinda redundant, too. -- Миборовский U|T|C|E|Chugoku Banzai! 07:55, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Okay, if the concensus is to keep zh-c/zh-cp/zh-cpw with a note that they should only be used in cases where both traditional and simplified overlap then that's fine. However, I still feel using 'u' to denote uniform will be more intuitive. Anyways, it's fairly straight forward process for a bot to detect violation on the uniformity law so I suppose it is not too important a point. --BenjaminTsai Talk 08:05, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Alright, we'll just leave it at that. Welcome to the 'pedia, BTW. Just talk to me (or any other admin or long-timer) if you have any questions on how things are done. -- Миборовский U|T|C|E|Chugoku Banzai! 08:10, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, BenjaminTsai, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of FireFox, Flcelloguy. Titoxd, and Karmafist. The next set of elections will be February 28, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work! --Celestianpower háblame 18:39, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Hello Ben,

I'm Ken, I know you from CMU, through Richard. I bought a domain name from you. It's such a surprise running into you on Wikipedia. I was just browsing "Taipei Rapid Transit System" and saw you as the last edit. Anyway, it's late for me. You'll find out about me on my user page. I'll talk to you later~~~ --Chochopk 11:35, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ken! I saw your username several days ago and thought it looked very familiar but couldn't figure out where I knew it from. :-) Yes, I remember your website, the one on currencies. Nice to run into you again. By the way, your user page is not rendering correctly in Firefox. --BenjaminTsai Talk 13:38, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Wierd, I use Firefox all the time, (Windows, Linux) x (1.5, 1.06). I have no problem. But thanks for the head up. By the way, how do you get a customized signature? Do you have to hard-paste it every time? --Chochopk 00:13, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Mmmm, interesting. Well, I'm using Firefox 1.07 on Windows at the moment. To get the customized signature, just change your "Nickname" in "my preferences". You can read more about it here. --BenjaminTsai Talk 05:14, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Doesn't render correctly for me either; I'm using Firefox on WinXP, NetBSD, and MacOS X, but will check with Flock and SeaMonkey. The problem is that the gallery of banknotes images overlaps with the userboxes somehow. —Nightstallion (?) 08:56, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Oh... I see the problem now. I'm using 1600 x 1200 or 1400 x 1050 screen. So I didn't know. I'll rearrange it. --Chochopk 10:00, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mutual intelligibility of Min-nan/Taiwanese

Hello, I saw that you had removed a paragraph in the Taiwanese (linguistics) entry about mutual intelligibility, but the comment attached to the edit said that Taiwanese and Min-nan are mutually intelligible, which seems to agree with the original article. Could you clarify that? Thanks! (and do please let me know if this is not the right place to raise this question) --ian 21:10, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ian, thanks for pointing that out. On closer reading it did say Taiwanese and Min-nan are mutually intelligible. I must have been thrown off by the last sentence, "Taiwanese, however, is mutually unintelligible with Mandarin Chinese or any other supposed Chinese dialects," which is of course nonsense. --BenjaminTsai Talk 22:15, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kinijos Respublika Taivanis

In the article of "Chinese language" in Lithuanian Wikipedia, it is an official language of "Kinijos Respublika Taivanis", which I believe means "Chinese Republic of Taiwan". You might want to investigate on that.

Hmmm, I think it's supposed to be written "Kinijos Respublika (Taivanis)" for Repulic of China (Taiwan). --BenjaminTsai Talk 16:10, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ROC Freeway System

Thanks a lot for making the improvements to the ROC freeway system articles. They are long overdue, but I just don't have time to make the upgrades because of my job at TSMC. I need to update the freeway exit sign because I've noticed for the past month that they have methodically changed the top portion of the exit sign. Allentchang 15:33, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chinese Templates

I noticed you're changing the Chinese templates to be "more precise and concise" but, though it is rather obvious, it's vague when you don't specify that those words are Chinese. Though it may be slightly longer, I think it's best to indicate "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese". We shouldn't take away meaning just to make it slightly more "concise". There isn't much point to that. --LakeHMM 00:06, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

The problem with that is it makes the document more disruptive to read, especially if the template is used multiple times within a paragraph. It also did occur to me that it might be ambiguous, but I later felt that the mouseover link should be enough to clear up any potential ambiguity issues. --BenjaminTsai Talk 08:34, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Freeway

Hi, Could you help mediate a mild dispute that I have with another user regarding the article on Freeway? The user and I need third party input. Check out Talk: Freeway. Have a Happy Chinese Lunar New Year (This year won won if you understand the Chinese pun here). Allentchang 00:45, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Gong Xi Fa Cai. :) I'll take a look at the dispute in a moment, it looks like an issue of photographed signs versus modeled signs. As for the pun, I'll try to remember it for 2018. --BenjaminTsai Talk 07:08, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the prompt response. The discussion has now gone to the point of getting Saturday Night Live into the argument as well as attacking my English ability and the ROC education system . . . BTW, did you get to know Ms. McDowell when you were in TAS? Or Haberlach? Or Mr. Blowers? Mr. Blowers has taught at TAS for 22 years by now and his hair has totally turned gray. And Ms. McDowell subcumbed to cancer at such a relatively young age. I feel old and mortal these days. Allentchang 17:27, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,
