Benton Park

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benton Park is a neighborhood park on the South Side of St. Louis, at the corner of Jefferson and Arsonal streets.

Prior to becoming a park, it was a cemetery used primarily for the 1849 cholera epidemic. The cemetery continued to be used until 1965. The bodied were removed to the Arsonal Island cemetery.

In June of 1866, the land became City Park. There was a problem with the water from the lake leaking into nearby English Cave. This was corrected by draining the lake and filling the crevices with concrete.
