Bennett Island

Bennett Island (Остров Беннетта in Russian) is one of the islands in a group of the De Long Islands in the northern part of the East Siberian Sea. It is a part of the Sakha. Area: approx. 150 sq km. The highest point of the island is 426 m. It is covered with glaciers.
Bennett Island was discovered by an American explorer George Washington DeLong in 1881 and named after James Gordon Bennett, Jr., who had financed the expedition. The island has been claimed by the United States since 1881 (http://www.statedepartmentwatch.org/Icebound.htm) and has been controlled by Russia since the early 1900's.
