[edit] History
As a boy, Speed grew up playing the cello and guitar. He graduated with honours in a degree in Music Technology from the Elder Conservatorium in 2005 and now lives in Sydney, Australia.
He began performing solo shows in 2001 and released two EP's under the monikers Mr Tappin' Fresh and The Other Half before retitling them under Mr Speed. Later, he teamed up with DJ Tr!p to form The New Pollutants, a music duo that toured to major festivals around Australia including the Falls Festival, Big Day Out and headlining the opening of the 2004 Adelaide Fringe Festival. The New Pollutants released a full length album, 12" EP and 7" single.
In 2005, The New Pollutants composed and performed a new soundtrack to the silent film Metropolis[1]. This project has performed at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), as a part of the 2006 Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival, at the 2006 Perth Revelations Film Festival] and 2005 Adelaide Film Festival. From the world premiere performance at the 2005 Adelaide Film Festival, the Adelaide Advertiser said: "Speed and Hopprich’s score was a gift"[2].
In 2006, Benjamin Speed relocated to Sydney and has since composed scores for short films, animations and television documentaries. He received the ‘Best Original Score’ award at the 2006 St Kilda ‘Top 100 Shorts’ Film Festival for the animated film Carnivore Reflux[3], a film that has also been nominated for the Australian Film Institute[4] and won at the Inside Film Awards[5]. In February 2007, Benjamin Speed had his debut solo album, The Dreamer, released through Creative Vibe].
