Bengt Edlén

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bengt Edlén, 1906-1993, was a Swedish professor of physics and astronomer specialized in spectroscopy. He participated in solving the Corona Mystery: unidentified spectral lines in the spectrum of sun was speculatively believed to originate from a hitherto unidentified chemical element coined Coronium, but instead revealed, by Edlén, to be lines from several times ionized iron. His discovery wasn't immediately accepted, since the alleged ionization required a temperatur of million degrees - later such solar corona temperatures were verified.

Edlén was professor at Lund's University 1944–73.

Bengt Edlén received The Gold Metal of Royal Astronomical Society 1945 for the solution of the Corona Mystery, and later the Henry Draper Medal in 1968.
