Beneath the Boardwalk was the name given to a collection of recorded tracks by Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys. Its name is a reference to a club the band often played at, "The Boardwalk". Due to many typos, including one on a popular fan site, the collection is often incorrectly called Beneath the Broadwalk.
[edit] Significance
The then-unknown band's rise to fame became apparent in late 2004 and early 2005 when they began to build an online fanbase after giving out copies of demo CDs at gigs. The contents of these CDs had been ripped onto computers and made available online, and Arctic Monkeys' audience spread across the UK and beyond due to online file sharing. This was epitomised by Beneath the Boardwalk, an unofficial collection of songs obtained at gigs available for download for free from local amateur photographer Mark 'The Sheriff' Bull's webpage. He is not to be confused with James Sheriff, a college friend of the band who administers their website.
This collection provided existing Arctic Monkeys fans with a one-stop-shop for all the demo tracks that had been released, as well as a good webpage to direct people who were looking to get into the band to, providing them with even more digital exposure. The fact that many people had already been introduced to the band by the time their first album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released was largely responsible in making the album the fastest-selling one of all time, which in turn has had a large impact on the band's success.
This collection is no longer available from the original webpage, and must be obtained either from other websites or peer-to-peer file sharing networks.
