Ben Ficklin, Texas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ben Ficklin, Texas (sometimes written as Benficklin) was founded by Benjamin Franklin Ficklin to support his Texas stagecoach operation in the mid-nineteenth century. After his death, the town was named in his honor. Located five miles south of Fort Concho on the east bank of the South Concho River, it served as the seat of Tom Green County, Texas from 1875 to 1882. Today, it is a ghost town. Tom Green County was created in 1874 as 12,500 square miles from the Territory of Bexar. The county seat was moved to San Angelo when an August 24, 1882 flood destroyed Ben Ficklin, killing 65 people.
