Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ben is the alter-ego of Glory. He was created as a prison for the hell goddess, but tried to lead a normal life in spite of it. After becoming a doctor, he came to Sunnydale and worked in the hospital. Whereas Glory is the embodiment of all things evil, Ben is a kind and decent man who showed great comforting skills to the entire Summers family during Joyce's illness.

However, Glory learned to free herself from her prison of flesh for periods of time. A spell prevents any human who saw the metamorphosis from remembering it. As Glory spends more time in control of their shared existence, Ben's life is wrecked. He summons a Queller demon to kill those who have been rendered insane by Glory's "brain-sucking." He also loses his job at the hospital when Glory has control of their existence for three weeks, and comments that he is tired of waking up wearing a dress. Ben knows that Dawn is the mystical Key for which Glory is searching, but attempts to hide that fact from her. He even attempts to start a romantic relationship with Buffy but fails.

At the end of Season 5, Ben tries to help Dawn flee from Glory, but in the end decides to assist her with the ritual to harness the Key's energy because Glory promises to make him immortal if he co-operates. After Glory is beaten, she reverts to Ben who is then smothered to death by Giles to make sure that Glory never returns.

Ben served as Glory's Achilles' Heel by which the gang was able to defeat her, and also portrays that even kind, decent men can do evil deeds in the name of self-preservation.
