Bemis is a small town in the northeast corner of South Dakota. It is not officially recognized by the state, but it elects a ceremonial mayor.

The town is entirely residential, with twelve houses along a 0.3-mile stretch of road, and its area is 0.3 square miles. 2/3 of the houses are occupied by married couples, and 40 is the average age. The population is about 37. Caucasians and Hispanics are the majorities.[citation needed]

Once, this was a relatively large town. This was when the railroad was running thought it and was in effect. They had a post office, general store, gas station, and even a school. Once the railroad was shut down, most residents left for Watertown, South Dakota or bigger towns.[citation needed]
