Belu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belu is a UK based social enterprise that uses the 100% of profits from the sale of mineral water to fund clean water projects in Africa and India. They have also launched the "the UK's first commercially compostable bottle" - made from corn it breaks down in 12 weeks. For the bottle to be home-composted however it will need to be shredded. They have recently gone carbon neutral by measuring, reducing and offsetting their carbon emissions.

Belu's philosophy is simply - if our economy is to become sustainable and reduce the possibility of catastrophic climate change, business needs to become sustainable. For this to happen 'sustainability' must become a competitive advantage - with companies competing to become the most sustainable and win market share. At Belu we call this the 'race to sustainability' and our mission is to be the gunshot that starts that race!

A website criticising the company points out that the whilst the cost to to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015 is $30 Billion a year, $100 billion a year is spent on bottled water. It also notes that "If you're looking for Belu bottled water, you'll find more or less the same stuff coming out of a tap for 1000th of the cost."

Belu Solutions is also the name of an Australian Based web design firm.
