[edit] Plot outline

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The episode opens with Frasier Crane on the air with a caller with a heavy French accent whom he cannot understand. After he goes off the air, Niles Crane stops by but fails to remember who Roz Doyle is. After Roz leaves, the two end up going out to dinner.

After they are seated at the restaurant, Niles spots Martin Crane with a woman across the restaurant. Because their father told them he would be at a bar with his friends, the boys are very curious in what looks like their father on a date. They continue to speculate on their father's love life until the woman he is with walks past them. Niles recognizes her as Marion Lawler, an old family friend whom they have not seen in many years.

The next day, Niles appears at Frasier's condo with his boyhood journal. He explains to his brother and Daphne his theory that their father had an affair with Marion Lawler when they were kids. Daphne thinks that the idea that Martin would cheat on his wife is ridiculous, but Frasier seems to be considering it. Suddenly their father enters and hears part of the conversation. Daphne tells him Niles' theory, and Martin eventually admits that he did have the affair.

The next scene is at Cafe Nervosa, with Frasier and Niles talking at a table. Frasier is struggling with the recent news, but Niles appears to have already coped with the news and offers the fact that their parents still had a happy marriage in spite of the affair. However Frasier, who clearly favored his mother, is still being hard on his father.

Some time after, Marion comes by Frasier's house looking for his father. After he tells her that Martin is not home, they begin to talk and Frasier learns that his father did not cheat on his mother with Marion, but rather his mother had an affair with Marion's husband. After she leaves, Frasier is clearly very upset by this news.

Some time later, Frasier confronts his dad about the news. Martin clearly is very upset that he brought it up again, but softens after Frasier reveals that Lilith did the same thing to Frasier while they were married. They talk for a minute, and at the end it is clear that the mutual knowledge has finally brought the two closer together for the first time since Martin moved in with Frasier.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

Frasier's apparent lack of knowledge of the French language at the beginning of the episode is inconsistent with the rest of the show where he is shown to speak French at least semi-fluently.

[edit] Memorable quotes

  • Frasier: Hi, Niles. You remember Roz?
Niles: Yes, of course. What brings you here?
Roz: Just passing by and thought I'd stop in for a career.
    Niles: Good luck.
