Bellydance Superstars

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bellydance Superstars is a professional American belly dance troupe formed by Miles Copeland. Founded in 2002, the troupe consists of ever-increasing number of successful and talented belly dancers who extensively tour around North America and Europe. They have released Bellydance Superstars I, II, and III, compilations of music picked by each dancer, as well as three DVDs, and a feature documentary film called American Bellydancer. With the increasing number of talented dancers an ensemble troupe called Desert Roses was also formed.

Their "American-ness" is marked by the ethinic diversity and the Hollywood-esque show full of eye-catching entertainment, including a comedic dancing Marilyn Monroe skit conducted by Dondi. The troupe members are young, beautiful, but skilled and experienced dancers in glitzy costumes. Asides from North American cabaret-style belly dance numbers, past shows have included a Polynesian number lead by Sonia, a Bollywood number lead by Jillina, a double veil number by Petit Jamilla, a wings of Isis number by Amar Gamal, as well as the more conventional troupe cane number.

Bellydance Superstars also propelled a American Tribal Style bellydance revolution in the mainstream, a formerly underground branch of belly dance formed by the renowned Jamilla Salimpour. Rachel Brice's performance, often consisting of dark, goth-inspired costumes, snaky moves and electronica and new age infused music, have redefined the school of tribal belly dancing all around North America.

Jillina is the choreographer and artistic director of the troupe numbers.
