Belize District

Belize District is a district of the nation of Belize, with its district capital in the nation's largest city, Belize City. Also in Belize District are the towns of Hattieville, Ladyville, San Pedro Town, Baker, Bermudian Landing, Big Falls, Biscayne, Bob Eiley, Bocotora, Bomba, Butcher Burns, Caye Caulker, Cedar Bank, Churchyard, Corozalito, Davis Bank, Eygpt, Flowers Bank, Freetown Sibun, Grace Bank, Isabella, La Democracia, Lime Walk, Lord's Bank, Lucky Strike, Maskall, More Force, Nago Bank, Rancho Dolores, Sand Hill, Saint Paul's, Santana, Tropical Park, Washing Tree, Watters Bank, White Hill and Willows Bank; the villages of Burrel Boom, Crooked Tree, Double Head Cabbage and Gales Point; and Rockstone Pond. Belize District also includes the Crooked Tree and the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuaries, Belize National Zoo (30 miles west of Belize City), as well as the ancient Maya ruins of Altun Ha. According to the 2000 census, Belize District had a population of 74,065 people.
Most of the Belize District is in the east central mainland of Belize; the Belize District also includes various off shore islands of Belize, including Ambergris Caye,Caye Caulker, St. George's Caye, and Goff's Caye. Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are considered the Country of Belize tourism hubs.

[edit] Political divisions
Politically, Belize District contains 13 constituencies according to the Elections and Boundaries Department. 10 of these are in Belize City proper; the remainder are classified as rural.
[edit] Belize Rural North
Belize Rural North contains the Northern Half of Belize District, including Maskall, Lucky Strike and villages in the Belize River Valley and along the Northern Highway, except for Ladyville and Lord's Bank. Its current representative is Maxwell Samuels; he will step down in 2008 in favour of Earl Perez. The UDP standard bearer is Edmond Castro.
[edit] Belize Rural Central
Belize Rural Central is limited to the southern half of the Belize District and containing the importnant villages of Ladyville, Lords' Bank, Hattieville and Gales Point. As of 2007, Ralph Fonseca is the elected representative and has been since its inception in 1992. He has not decided on a fourth term in office yet; the UDP's Michael Hutchinson is their standard bearer.

Belize Rural South typically contains the Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker and other offshore islands. Its main town is San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye. The current representative is the UDP's Manuel Heredia; the PUP standard bearer is Merlene Spain.
