Belinda is the first album by Mexican singer-songwriter Belinda. It was released in Mexico by Sony International and RCA Records on August 5, 2003. The album was produced by Pete Craigie and Graeme Pleeth. The album titled "Belinda" and the other album titled "Belinda (Enhanced)" are the only albums that are being sold today. The rest were limited edition.

[edit] Controversy

The album and the image built around Belinda led to comparisons by the media to 90s teen idol Fey, whose first two albums, Fey and Tierna La Noche contained similar music. Critics attacked the music label for trying to fill the gap Fey had left years later with the young Belinda and rumors intesified after the announcement of a 6th, and later a 7th, single. Fey's Sophomore album, Tierna La Noche, received much airplay, which allowed the company to release all of the songs on the album (all of these songs would enter the Mexican Top 20 and all but 3 of them peaked at 1). Further critics erupted after the flop of these last two singles and of the many re-releases of the album, which would be re-released three times with almost no new contributions.

[edit] Singles

  • Lo Siento- Being the album's first single, Lo Siento received massive promotion and debuted high on the Mexican charts. After only 6 weeks on the chart, Lo Siento reached No.1. The song showed a big change in the artist's music, which moved away from the Children's Music Genre she had been in earlier to solid Pop.
  • Boba Niña Nice- Although the song rose very rapidly in the Mexican 100, the song quickly fell out, mainly because of lack of promotion by the label. This song led to comparions with Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi.
  • Angel- Angel, the third single from the album, was a massive hit in Mexico and an important international hit for Belinda. The song stayed at No. 1 in Mexico for 6 weeks and reached the top 5 in every country it charted in, including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Central America, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Spain. The song positioned Belinda as the prime teen entertainer in Latin America.
  • Vivir- Vivir, the 4th single, served as the theme for the telenovela Corazones Al Limite (in which she would also act for a short time), and quickly gained airplay in the charts. The song was Belinda's second most succesful entry on the Mexican 100 (Angel had charted 6 weeks at 1, while Vivir managed to do so for 5), and became her most succesful song in the U.S. Hot Latin Charts.
  • Be Free, No Entiendo and Donde Ire Yo?- Respectively the 5th, 6th and 7th singles. The last two of these gave rise to the infamous Fey Controversy. Be Free was praised for its attempt at crossover, and the large airplay caused the single to reach an unexpected No.3. On the Other hand, No Entieno and Donde Ire Yo? were the first flops in Belinda's solo career. No Entiendo managed to achieve a respectable peak position of 15; however, after its peak at 15, the song fell out in three weeks. The label tried to overshadow this flop with the release of yet another single, Donde Ire Yo?, whih received practically no airplay and didn't even chart in the Mexican 100.
