Belgrave Edward Sutton Ninnis (January 22 1887 - December 14, 1912) was a Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. Son of British arctic explorer Belgrave Ninnis MD(1837-1922), Inspector Surgeon General of the Royal Navy and member of Captain Sir George Nares Arctic Expedition 1875-1876. Ninnis joined Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911 as a minder of the Greenland dogs, and was part of Mawson's three-man sledging team in the summer. On November 10, 1912, Mawson, Ninnis and Mertz left the main base to survey King George V Land. Crossing the Ninnis Glacier, Ninnis fell through a snow-covered crevasse. Six dogs, most of the rations, the tent and other essential supplies fell into the crevasse 400 km east of the main base and were never seen again. Ninnis' cousin Lieut. Aubrey Howard Ninnis was an engineer on Shackleton's 1914-1916 Antarctica Expedition, Ross Sea Party .
