Belfry High School (Kentucky)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belfry High School is a high school in Pike County, Kentucky. They're known for success in all sports. However, not being able to "Win the big one" was the proverbial Achilles' heel for this athletically well-endowed institution. Mercifully, this changed in 2003 and 2004 as the team finally triumphed at the Kentucky Class AA State Championships. With both seasons having Doug Howard and David Jones, two of the best running backs in the state at that time. Due to the recent Kentucky high school re-alignment, it is now an AAA football school.

Belfry has lost in the Semi-Finals of the Kentucky Class AA State Finals two years in a row, both times to Russell. In 2005, 20-14, and in 2006, 19-0. In 2005, with under one minute left, Belfry was at Russell's 15 yard line, and quarterback Jordan Phillips threw an interception on a pass intended for Tight End Aaron Chapman in the End Zone.

Belfry's football coach is Phillip Haywood.

Belfry enrolls over 600 students and it's principal's name is Rodney Varney. The school has had a recent move between in the summer of 2005 to a new, multi hundred million dollar school. Funding for the school was partly by the Kentucky Board of Edutcation, and Massey Energy

Belfry is a Certified School of Excellence and currently has football, baskeball(boys & girls), track, soccer, baseball, softball and many other extra-curricular activities.
