Beijing International Studies University

Beijing International Studies University (Abbreviation:BISU), a municipal university of Beijing China. It is also called Erwai according to Pingyin of the university. In Chinese it is called 北京第二外国语学院(pinyin: běi jīng dì èr wài guó yǔ xué yuàn). Before the modification in the year of 2003, its full name in English was Beijing Second Foreign Language University. BISU is located in Beijing's Chaoyang District.

Beijing International Studies University was founded on October 24th after a visit in some foreign countries of former Chinese Premier Minister Zhou Enlai, who pointed out that more graduates in foreign studies are needed to expand the exchange with foreign countries.

According to the latest information on the official website of BISU, the university should be developed into a teaching dominated university with foreign studies as major subjects, tourism management as a key subject, and combining literature, management, economics, law studies.

Until 2007, BISU has 8 departments, 8 schools and 3 research institutes. They are English Dept, Japanese Dept, Russian Dept, German Dept, French&Italian Dept, Spanish&Portuguese Dept, Arabic Dept, Korean Dept, and School of Tourism Management, School of International Trade and Economics, School of Broadcasting, School of Law&Politics, School of Translation Studies, School of Professional Training, School of Further Education, School of International Cultural Exchange, Research Institute of Tourism Development, Research Institute of Cross Cultural Studies, Research Institute of Foreign Literature and applied Linguistics.

In 2007, 20 Majors are provided in undergraduate level (pls refer to details below); 12 Majors are available in postgraduate level, they are English, Japanese, German, French, Arabic, Tourism Management, Foreign Literature and Applied Linguistics, Coperate Management, International Trade, Aesthetics, Comparation Literature and World Literature. In terms of international exchange, the major of Chinese Literature and Culture is set for foreign students.

With the motto "Be conscientious, hardworking!!Pursue Truth and Excellence!", BISU emphasizes not only on theoretical knowledges, but also practical abilities and ethical education of the students.

Before the 40 Years' Inaugural Celebration, the campus was in large scale renovated and some new buildings were built. Till now, the campus has formed its own character featured by red walls and greens. In 2003, a statue of former Premier Minister Zhou Enlai, who appealed on establishing "Beijing Second Foreign Language University" (Former English name of BISU), was set up with the donation of the faculty and students of BISU.

  • 1964, under the administration of Commission for Foreign Cultural Exchange;
  • 1968, passed on to Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • 1971, passed on to Beijing municipium;
  • 1978, under double administration of Ministry of Education and Beijing municipium, mainly by Ministry of Education;
  • 1983, passed on to State Bureau of Tourism;
  • 2000, finally under the double administration of Central Government and Beijing municipium, mainly by Beijing municipium.

The change in ascription for many times had a negative impact on the steady development of BISU.
