Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT,北京理工大学) is a university located in Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Founded in 1940 as Yan'an Academy of Natural Science. In 1946 renamed Jin-Cha-Ji Remote Area Industrial College. In October 1948 merged with the Engineering College of Northern University to create the Engineering College of North-China University. In 1951 renamed Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT).

  • In 1959, BIT was designated as one of the sixteen key universities in China by the central government.
  • In 1984, BIT was authorized as one of the first twenty-two universities to run graduate school on trial.
  • In 1988, the institution changed its Chinese name from "Institute" to "University" with the English name remaining unchanged.
  • In December 1995, BIT was ratified by the central government as one of the "211 Project" universities.
  • In 1996, BIT became one of the first universities to run a graduate school.
  • In 1999, BIT's undergraduate education was evaluated as "Excellent" in the assessment organized by the Ministry of Education.
  • In 2000, BIT was listed in "985 project" as one of the first ten universities which are given priorities to develop the national first-class and international known universities.

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was founded in Yan’an in 1940. BIT is a national key university, an open, international and research-oriented university of science, engineering and humanities with science and engineering as the focus. It is one of the first universities to run a graduate school and receive privileged fund from the central government in “the 7th, 8th and 9th Five Year Plan.” BIT is also one of the national “Project 211” universities receiving preferential support from the state. In 2000, BIT was listed in “Plan 985,” which gives priority for development by Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND), Ministry of Education (MOST) and Beijing Municipal Government. In 1999, BIT passed the evaluation for “Outstanding in Undergraduate Program” sponsored by MOST. BIT ranks among the first-class universities for its high educational and research quality, strong faculty teams, and academic programs with distinctive characteristics.

BIT is organized into 11 academic schools and 43 research centers. It also has Graduate School, School of Continuing Education, School of Distance Learning, College of Higher Vocational Studies, Xishan Branch School, Qianhuangdao Branch School, Juhai Campus and Liangxiang Campus.

The main campus of BIT occupies an area of 920,700 square meters, with a floor space of 724,000 square meters. Plus, the construction area for Liangxiang Campus in Beijing is 2,000,000 square meters, for Zhuhai Campus in Guangdong is 3,330,000 square meters. BIT has now become a multi-disciplinary university of engineering, science, management, humanities, economics, law, and pedagogy. While maintaining its great strength in engineering, it pays great attention to the balanced development of other disciplines.

The current dean is Kuang Jingming (匡镜明).

BIT appointed 174 visiting professors, 38 advisory professors and 6 honorary professors in China, plus, 45 overseas visiting professors and 12 honorary professors and conferred 2 honorary doctoral degree to Mr. Shaper from Germany and Mr. Sheffield from the USA.
