Bedrock High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bedrock High School is a high school, located in the fictional town of Bedrock, in Cobblestone County. Bedrock High School is an important Bedrock institution which appeared on the animated television series The Flintstones, as well as its various spinoffs.

Bedrock High School is a relatively large high school, and like every other building in Bedrock, in made stone. It is generally depicted as a large two story building. However, the size of the student body, and the school's curriculum seems to differ from its original appearance on the Flintstones, to its subsequent reappearance on The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show (and other spin-offs).

For example, in High School Fred, when Fred Flintstone attends the school, it has few lockers, and his homeroom class seems to be, aside from the gym (in phys. ed.), the room where he has all his classes. It is organized much like a grade school.

On the Pebbles and Bamm Bamm Show, the school is oraganized more like a conventional high school, with lockers in the hallway, and Pebbles and her gang attending various classes throughout the day. The school also has a variety of classrooms for Art, Music, and so forth.

In both incarnations, Bedrock High School has excellent athletic facilities, especially when one considers that Bedrock is a town of 2,500 people. Nonetheless, the school often chooses not to use their own facilities to host a big game. Bedrock High School uses Bedrock's college professional sport's stadiums instead of their own football field, ball diamond, etctera. One prominent example of this phenomenon is found in the Flinstones episode "High School Fred" where the high school's big game was played in a football stadium.

It may be hypothesized, that sometime after Fred received his diploma, and Pebbles entered her Freshmen year, the old Bedrock High School went under major renorvations or was demolished completely. That explain why the school that was the focus of The Pebbles and Bamm Bamm show bore little resemblance to the school Fred Flintstone attended.

[edit] Importance to the Series

[edit] The Flintstones

Bedrock High School was rarely seen or mentioned on the Flintstones. It did, however, figure prominently in the aforementioned episode "High School Fred," of the original The Flintstones television series.

In this episode, Fred Flintstone goes back to Bedrock High School for a two weeks so as to get his high school diploma. He had been sick the last couple of weeks when he originally went to high school, and he needed the diploma to keep his job at Slate Rock and Gravel. He ended up involved in sixties teenage hijinks such as drinking malt sodas at the drug store, and playing on the football team, where Fred was twice as large as the other players.

[edit] The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show

Unlike The Flintstones, Bedrock High School was the major backdrop for the action on The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, which ran from September 11, 1971 to September 2, 1972 on CBS. Teen-aged versions of Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm Bamm Rubble from the original Flintstones program sang songs and rode dinosaurs and did other wacky, teenage stuff, again, mostly at Bedrock High School
