Plot Synopsis:
Slater plays a widowed florist named Lewis who falls in love with Lisa, a business professional, played by Masterson. Lisa was a foster child placed with couple when she was very young. Shortly thereafter, the foster mother died and the foster father petitioned the state to allow him to keep Lisa. In a flashback scene we see a very young Lisa ask her father when her birthday is, and he replies, "You don't have one." It is revealed that Lisa was abused by her father. This horrible childhood affected her persuit of true love and happiness. She engrossed herself in her work to keep her mind off of things. Then she meets Lewis. Lewis owns a flower shop and takes long walks during the night, unable to sleep. He lost "everything" when there were complications when his wife went into labor. His wife and child both died during delivery.
Lewis sees Lisa crying in a 2nd floor window one night while taking a walk. Unbeknownst to him, she has recently been informed her stepfather has passed away. Lewis concerned about why she was so sad, finds out where she works and delivers a beautiful arrangement of flowers to her the next day and doesn't sign the card. Lisa embarks on a mission to find out who sent the flowers. It leads her right back to Lewis. Even though Lewis is the owner of the flower shop, he often delivers flowers himself because he likes seeing people's faces when they get gifts. Lewis talks Lisa into delivering flowers with him and they fall in love. The relationship struggles, primarily due to both of their past experiences (Lisa's dark childhood and Lewis' loss of his family).
The film was not praised by critics, which is revealed by a "rotten" rating (17%) on Rotten Tomatoes. However it grossed a respectable $19 million USD in the United States and was released on DVD in 1999. A music Soundtrack from the film was also made available. [1]
Bed of Roses was produced by Juno Pix and New Line Cinema, and it was distributed in the US by New Line.
