[edit] Historical background
The company is well known in the automation industry. In 1995 Beckhoff invented the bus terminal, together with the German company Wago. A bus terminal allows to select very different analoge and digital signals from a machine, building or plant, and transmits it via a fieldbus or industrial ethernet system to the system controller. In additon a bus terminal is able to distribute the output signals from the controller into the field.
However, in the last ten years the bus terminal developed to an industrial standard. In the meantime a lot of companies developed me-too products to participate on this success. In the meantime Beckhoff launched the second generation, the EtherCAT bus terminals. EtherCAT is a real-time Industrial Ethernet and an invention of Beckhoff, too.
Important companies like Continental Tyres and Microsoft trust in the Beckhoff technology. The company is a pioneer of the PC-based automation technology (opposite to hardware SPS controller). In the last years the company invests to grow to an international company. In 2006 Beckhoff already works with a network of 18 international subsidiaries all over the world. The company grows approx. 25 % per year.

You can find much more interesting information about Beckhoff via Google. A very good source is the PC-Control Magazine.

[edit] Notability and reference templates added
This is a very well-written article. Given the company's size, it is almost certainly notable. Having said that, however, someone needs to add references to support that notability, then remove the tags. --A. B. 16:51, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- Deleted tags in light of the info Moosheide just posted above. --A. B. 18:13, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm a German user of Wikipedia.de. I'm working in the automation business and know Beckhoff products very well. In fact Beckhoff is one of the ealiest vendor of automation systems based on pc technology. Twenty years ago they started to control wood and window manufactoring machines with their components. In 1986 this was revolution because nobody was able to realize real-time processes with a pc. I estimate that the software based machine automation has got a market share of 30 % today. Beckhoff has an extensive share on this development. Checker2000 19:19, 5 Nov 2006 (CET)
