Cistercian Abbey founded by Murchad O'Maeil-Sheachlainn in 1147 as a 'daughter house' of Mellifont Abbey. Although nothing remains except old ruins and walls, it is in a remarkable state of preservation. Bective Abbey is easy to find thanks to many sign posts along the way and it sets in the middle of a farmer's pasture. You get access to the grounds by climbing through a small hole in a gate. A short stroll across the field take you to the wall of the Abbey, over which you must climb. It has easy access and is worth a visit. Just seeing the huge thousand year old tree on the Abbey grounds is amazing. Standing among the ruins as the wind blows, one can almost hear the sounds of those who once lived and worked within her walls.
